NGAUS History 18July2008

Maj. Gen. James F. Cantwell, NGAUS president, and Col. James B. Deerin, NGAUS executive director, were two of the 12 representatives of military and veterans’ organizations called to the White House on April 12, 1970, for a briefing on defense matters by President Richard Nixon. Seated around a large mahogany table in the Cabinet Room, the group listened to the president for 55 minutes. Nixon expressed concern over the Soviet Union’s growing arsenal of strategic weapons, the ability of the United States to continue to exert diplomatic and military leadership in thMaj. Gen. James F. Deerin, NGAUS executive director, were e world if the Soviets should forge ahead in military power and the growing anti-militarism in the U.S. Nixon also emphasized the need for the United States to provide an adequate defense while attending to domestic problems.
