FALLUJAH, Iraq (Aug. 7, 2008) — A well-known city council member and tribal leader spoke to the citizens of Fallujah during his second State of the City address at the city’s government center Thursday. Sheik Hamid Ahmed Al-Hashim, city council chairman, delivered his speech to the people of Fallujah through the local media. He addressed the progress the city has made in the past year, and focused on various quality of life projects and security improvements.
The city of Fallujah is rebuilding, Hamid said. “We have a bright future ahead of us. Everyday, improvements are being made.” The city currently has several ambitious projects under way, with each one addressing different aspects of citizens' quality of life, he said.The Fallujah general hospital, which is scheduled to open soon, will provide quality health care to the Fallujah residents with medical professionals, and necessary medical wards needed to tend to the basic health needs of the populace, Hamid said.
He added that, with the help of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the city is also developing a major sewer system which will provide the public a more sanitary environment.
To give Fallujah a new “facelift," a park is under construction along the city’s main street, Hamid said. The park will have walking paths and gazebos that will give residents a refreshing atmosphere.
The city is also using its own resources to resolve electricity shortages throughout neighborhoods, installing 34 generators and providing energy to nearby homes. Hamid commented during his address that he would like to see the electricity efforts furthered. “Although 34 generators are good, they are not enough. We would like to double that number in the future.”
Hamid discussed other projects spearheaded by the government of Iraq such as road reconstruction, the Fallujah university and the Saqlawia Bridge. He also spoke about seeing the Iraqi government focus more on agriculture and live-stock production in hopes of boosting Fallujah’s economy and generating more jobs.
The last issue presented during the State of the City Address was security. Hamid assured the citizens that Fallujah is the most secure city in Iraq and expressed his gratitude to all coalition and Fallujah security forces for their excellent work and sacrifices they have made to make it all possible.
Security is only getting better, he said.
Hamid continued, congratulating the Iraqi security forces in capturing three al Qaeda in Iraq members who were responsible for the recent suicide bomber attacks in Fallujah.
After the State of the City Address, Hamid was accompanied with the city mayor, Sa’ad Awad Rashad Al-Dulaimi, and city chief of police, Abdul Karim Munth’ir Ali Al-Jumayli, for a question and answer session with the media.
Karim restated the capture of the three AQI members and promised the people of Fallujah that the city will stay safe. He also assured them that with the combined efforts between coalition and Iraqi security forces such attacks will not happen again.
Sa’ad opened his statements by showing gratitude towards the police and their efforts in the city. He and the Iraqi security forces are working at a high level of coordination, and are soon to open the joint operation center to fight off remaining AQI elements.
