Gun Rights In Danger

I am so sick of explaining and fighting for that which is constitutionally already mine, but here we go again.

Obama's new Attorney General, Eric Holder, has already said this is one of his major issues. He does not believe the 2ndAmendment gives individuals the right to bear arms. This takes literally 2 clicks to complete. Please vote on this gun issue question with USA Today. It will only take a few seconds of your time. Then pass the link on to all the pro gun folks you know. Hopefully these results will be published later this month. This upcoming year will become critical for gun owners with the Supreme Court's accepting the District of Columbia case against the right for individuals to bear arms.

RINO's on the Firearm attack

Wouldn't ya know it, the RINO's came up with a bill that the dems just love. They want to reinstate the ban on the so-called assault weapons. Isn't that nice what they call them? No, they don't call them guns. That would be too easy. That wouldn't scare real people. They have to call them weapons! Oh my, they can't have people knowing that they really want to disarm us so that we won't have the protection that the Constitution assured us so we can protect ourselves against the US GOVERNMENT CRETANS. We are guaranteed these rights to fight off tyrannies, bucko! That includes YOU! Am I writing run-on sentences? Oh well. Deal with it. (That's a note to myself. I hate run-on sentences.)

Guns in School, what a novel idea!

House panel OKs bill allowing guns on campuses.

Law-abiding people should be allowed to carry and possess guns on the campuses of South Dakota's public universities, a state House committee recommended Wednesday.

The State Affairs Committee voted unanimously to pass HB1261, which would guarantee people the right to carry or possess firearms on college campuses. The schools also would be prevented from expelling students or firing employees for having a gun on campus.

The panel later voted unanimously to kill a competing measure, sponsored by the Board of Regents, which sought to ban guns on campus.

Rep. Thomas Brunner, R-Nisland, the main sponsor of the bill allowing guns on campus, said most mass shootings in recent years have occurred in areas where guns are prohibited. Murderers have been able to kill many people because no one else was armed and able to stop them before law officers arrived, he said.

If more people carried guns, they could stop mass murderers before they kill so many people, Brunner said. The guard who shot and wounded a gunman at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs in December helped save lives, he said.

"Should a person have less freedom and safety than anyone else simply because he or she attends college?" Brunner said.

Nancy First, South Dakota coordinator of Second Amendment Sisters, said a handgun is the best defense for a woman walking at night on a college campus or anywhere else.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," First said.

The only opponent to the bill was Jim Shekleton, legal counsel for the state Board of Regents, who said allowing students and faculty to carry guns could make campuses more dangerous.

If other people exchange gunfire with a madman in a classroom or sports arena, more people could be hurt or injured in the crossfire, Shekleton said. When law officers arrive, they might mistakenly shoot the wrong person if several people in the room are holding guns, he said.

"A free-fire zone is more likely to do more harm than good," Shekleton said.

The best way to prevent mass shootings on campuses is to improve the response when students or others exhibit disturbing behavior, Shekleton said. Last year's shooting at Virginia Tech was caused by a breakdown in identifying and handling a disturbed student, he said.

"By the time the weapon is drawn, it's too late," Shekleton said.

The defeated bill, HB1086, would have banned guns from campuses except for military training, ceremonial uses and classes involving firearms training. Shekleton said 21 other states have similar bans on guns on campuses, while many other states restrict weapons on campus to some extent.

He said Utah allows weapons to be carried on university campuses.

Brunner said he has children attending college, and he thinks allowing law-abiding citizens to carry weapons would improve campus safety.

Air Force sharpshooters help cmdrs see the future

KIRKUK REGIONAL AIR BASE, IRAQ -- When servicemembers go outside the wire here, they occasionally have an extra set of eyes watching over them. Concealed, the members of the 506th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron's Close Precision Engagement Team observe, provide intelligence and, if necessary, neutralize threats.

The CPET consists of Air Force security forces counter-snipers whose expert marksmanship and ability to stay invisible allows them to sneak up to an enemy undetected and neutralize them if needed.

"A large part of our job here is reconnaissance for the Army and sometimes agents with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations detachment here," said Staff Sgt. Curtis Huffman, the CPET NCO in charge. "When they have a mission outside of the wire we'll set up near that location about an hour or more before they get out there. Concealed and out of sight, we are able to observe the area and give them real time intel before they even arrive."

Through direct communication with the mission commander, the sharpshooters let the team know how many people are in the area, their exact location, if there are any weapons or if the people seem to be hiding anything. That way, the team knows exactly what to expect before arriving at the location. "Close Precision Engagement provides us with the ability to see into the future," said Special Agent Christopher Church, the OSI Det. 2410 commander. "They provide us with a situational awareness that we would not have without them. Having them watch over us during missions makes an enormous difference."

The sharpshooters' skills also help save lives during counter improvised explosive device and counter indirect fire operations. "We respond to routes that get hit by IEDs a lot, or an area that is known for launching IDFs," said Sergeant Huffman, who is deployed from Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. "We'll set up somewhere concealed along that route or that area where we can watch people setting stuff up so we can get them before they can hurt our guys. We could be there from 24 to 72 hours."

CPE team members also respond to their own comrades. If security forces members on patrol or on a post perceives suspicious activities in the area, they can call on the team to come out and, using their trained eyes, optics and night vision capability, determine if there is an actual threat.

Each sniper team consists of two people, the spotter and the shooter. The spotter's responsibility is to determine things like the distance to the target, wind direction and then provide the shooter with corrections, which are adjustments on the rifle.

"Spotters do all the mathematical equations for range estimation, windage, everything from start to end," said Airman 1st Class Matt Leeper, a CPET member also deployed from Eielson AFB. "The spotter definitely has the more difficult job. Your spotter has to be quick and accurate when giving the corrections. There is no time for the shooter to think twice. Your spotter is always right."

There are approximately 350 trained sharpshooters in the Air Force. Security forces members must show exceptional marksmanship abilities and attend three weeks of training at Camp Robinson, Ark., to become a counter-sniper. "The school is physically and mentally very challenging," Airman Leeper said. "You are learning from the first day you get there."

There, students are introduced to the M-24 sniper rifle, the military version of a Remington 700. "The trigger squeeze on this weapon is a lot lighter than the M-4 and it also has a lot more kick," Airman Leeper remarked. "Your shoulder gets roughed up at school where we fire more than 100 rounds a day."

Despite being a small part of their job at Kirkuk RAB, the shooting is often the most important aspect. "Only about five percent of our job is taking that shot and the other 95 percent is intelligence gathering," he said. "But when you are in a situation where you have to neutralize a threat, you can't really think about anything except you have positive identification on that target, they have a weapon or you know they are placing an IED. You put that target in your cross hairs, you imagine it's just a blank target at your school house and you pull the trigger. You don't have time to think about anything else."

The counter-snipers accomplish many missions, but find the most rewarding to be watching over soldiers or OSI agents, they said. "This is the reason why I joined," Airman Leeper said. "When we are out there giving them info and providing cover I feel like I'm doing my job. I don't feel like I deserve a medal, nothing like that. This is what my job is, and what I joined to do. I joined to come to Iraq and I went through sniper school to be an asset to the Air Force."

JALALABAD AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Few things are as frightening on the battlefield as incoming artillery. But these essential assets are more than loud bangs heard sporadically on the forward operating bases [FOB's] in eastern Afghanistan. The "king of battle," as artillery is called, has become increasingly important.

Everything from the incredibly unforgiving terrain to the ability of insurgents to dissipate into the civilian population has made clear the significance of indirect fire support.

"In this fight, fire support is very important," said 1st Lt. Duane Mantle, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry (Airborne) assistant fires support officer, from Warren, N.J. "As soon as we make contact, the first thing the Soldiers look for is to bring in fires on the enemy."

Although the manner in which wars are fought today are different from past wars in many respects, the adaptability of the 155mm Howitzers of Battery B, 4th Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, on Forward Operating Base Blessing and other indirect assets providing support to paratroopers based along the Pech River Valley, has been proven extensively useful in just a short time after arriving in theater about a month ago.

"It's not like the previous wars when they lined up and we would mow them down," said Mantle. "Fires have a lot of different effects. When we fire the 155s from here, the enemy doesn't hear the round coming in. It immediately puts the enemy on the defensive and has a tremendous demoralizing effect."

The rounds can also be used to fix enemy combatants. "That's a huge part of this conflict, separating them from the population, but we can do it when they are on a ridge firing on us," said Mantle. As artillery is called in, it disrupts the enemy's movement or causes them to seek cover, providing U.S. and/or Afghan forces a variety of options.

The Soldiers, who man the guns at FOB Blessing, understand the impact they have placing timely and accurate fires on the enemy. It is a job they take seriously for good reason. "Last deployment we had a fire mission to support some troops in contact," said Sgt. Stephen Murphy of Bravo Battery's 2nd Platoon, a native of Berwick, Penn. who had just finished a fire mission with his section. "One of the Soldiers who was there came to us afterwards and said we had saved his life. He even showed us pictures of his family. I was like 'Roger. I'll be faster next time.'"

Just hours later, the 155mm Howitzers at FOB Blessing pounded the mountains of the Pech River Valley in support of multiple fire fights. Within a few hours, the battery had fired 111 rounds simultaneously supporting three separate sites.
