NK Has Nukes; Demands On USA

It is being reported by many news outlets that North Korea now has between 4 and 7 'weaponized' nuclear weapons. The IAEA is not allowed to inspect these areas, and they now believe they have a better chance of obtaining 'friendly' and 'normalized' relations with the USA because of Obama.

For all of you people who voted for him, I would like to thank you so very freaking much. Did we not warn you of this? Oh, but your hatred for President Bush was so fierce that you lost your minds. You must have. We are at war, and you deny this fact. We cannot allow this puny punk to push around, lest others begin to think they can do the same. Oh, but you got what you, didn't ya. I hope it was worth it to you. I also hope that if there is a nuclear strike, the weapon is aimed at you.

The links for some of these articles are: Researcher: North Korea has 'Weaponized' Plutonium (FoxNews.com), US Expert Says North Korea Has 'Weaponized' Plutonium (VOA), Researcher: North Korea has `weaponized' plutonium (AP, map included), North Korea Has Enough Plutonium for 6 Nuclear Bombs, NYT Says (Bloomberg.com: Asia), and NKorea says may retain nukes, raises border tensions with Seoul (SpaceWar.com).

PS. SpaceWar.com is the ONLY one who spoke of the imminent threat to Seoul, Korea, whereas the South actually had to be put on high alert! I recommend this article, but only if you actually care about what is happening the world. My God. Did I go to sleep and wake up in the Twillight Zone? Somebody please, WAKE ME UP!

New CENTCOM Unit Makes It Tough To Be A Pirate

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (Jan. 16, 2009) - A new patrol in the U.S. Central Command is working to make it unprofitable to be a pirate, the commander of U.S. Navy Central Command and 5th Fleet said Jan. 15. Acts of piracy have "spiked" off the coast of Somalia with merchant vessels and crews being held for millions in ransom by pirates using AK-47 assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and ladders to take "low and slow" ships traversing one of the world's busiest sea lanes.

Marine Cpl. Cole Daniels trains with a shotgun aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio. San Antonio is the command ship for Combined Task Force 151. The task force conducts counter-piracy operations in and around the Gulf of Aden, Persian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea and was established to create a lawful maritime order and develop security in the maritime environment. The pirates come from a clan based on the northern coast of Somalia, Navy Vice Adm. William E. Gortney said, and they are in it for the money. "The problem of piracy started ashore," the admiral said during a Pentagon news conference. "It's because there is no rule of law. There isn't a government. There isn't economic stability. There isn't a court system that will hold these criminals responsible for their actions." Without a penalty for the Somalis, these clansmen -- who are normally fishermen -- took to piracy.

"As commander of the Combined Maritime Forces, I directed the establishment of the Maritime Security Patrol Area," Gortney said. Coalition ships and aircraft patrol the area, but it is a complex operation, and task forces already in place had an existing counterterrorism mission. As a solution, Gortney established Combined Task Force 151 to conduct counter-piracy operations. Nations that are members of the task force "will bring their collective capabilities to bear to deter, to disrupt and eventually to bring to justice these maritime criminals," he said.

The coalition group works with all concerned nations to deter the pirates and it has had some success. "I think, it's really a fascinating story to watch unfold as, at this point, 14 nations have sent their navies to work against this destabilizing activity," he said. This includes Russia and China, which are primarily escorting their own national flag vessels. "That allows us to go focus elsewhere with the rest of the ships that are down there," Gortney said.

The efforts against piracy focused on three areas: bringing in more international forces, working with the shipping industry to put in place defenses to prevent pirates from successfully getting onboard their vessel, and finding a way to deal with the pirates legally. "When we capture a pirate, where do we take him? Where do we hold him? What court system tries him and holds him?" Gortney asked. [NOT GITMO! They'll cry for him and then let him go!]

"When the activity spiked in the middle of August, we knew ... our current process wasn't working, and we had to take a new look at it," the admiral said. And it is working. In the last six weeks there have been only four successful piracy attacks, the admiral said. "Dis-incentivizing piracy" is what Gortney calls the missing piece. "The State Department is close on finalizing an agreement with one of the nations out there," he said. "And once we get that authority, then we're going to change my orders."

The orders to the coalition now are to disrupt and deter, but not capture, pirates. "But once we get the authorities, my orders will change to disrupt, deter and capture, and try and hold them accountable for their actions," he said. "We have to make it unpleasant to be a pirate, and that's where, when we can capture them and try them and hold them accountable for their actions," he said.

Cpl. Cole Daniels, a military policeman assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 26, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, train with a shotgun aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio. San Antonio is the command ship for Combined Task Force 151. The task force conducts counter-piracy operations in and around the Gulf of Aden, Persian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea and was established to create a lawful maritime order and develop security in the maritime environment.

To Libs: I Want A Divorce!

I found this fantastic article while surfing the net, and I want to share it with my libertarian leaning, conservative, and liberal friends. It sounds like a very reasonable idea to me. See if you agree.
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists, Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950’s, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot, and will not ever agree on what is right, so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile, chalk it up to irreconcilable differences, and go our own way…

Here is a model separation agreement:

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA, and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore, and Rosie O’Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them) …

We’ll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart, and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies, and illegal aliens. We’ll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO’s, and rednecks. We’ll keep the bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood. You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we’ll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks, and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we’ll help provide them security…

We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N. But we will no longer be paying the bill.

We’ll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks, and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone healthcare, if you can find any practicing doctors. We’ll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We’ll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I’m sure you’ll be happy to substitute Imagine, I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya, or We Are the World.

We’ll practice trickle down economics, and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you we’ll also keep our history, our name, and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so please pass it along to other like minded liberal and conservative patriots, and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

Sincerely,

John J. Wall.

P.S. Also, please take Barbara Streisand.

This is so awesome! Imagine having not to fight over whether or not a child is a life? Imagine being able to pray in school or teach your children at home? Imagine not having to believe in God and NOT being offended when others do? Imagine being able to keep what you earn instead of paying for the mistakes and stupid decisions of others when you were careful not to make those same mistakes? Imagine being proud of our country and not having to look over your shoulder to make sure there's not an anti-war protester idiot there. WOW!

Finally. And they could live in their own utopia...until they figure out their way does not work. We must have in our new constitution an amendment that declares that anyone who comes on our property must have permission, must not be ill, must speak English (or be willing to learn it), and cannot receive ANYTHING that citizens are paying taxes for...PERIOD.

That way there is no dispute with what to do with animals whose only desire it is to murder us. In this regard, every household should be required to own their own firepower. It used to be that way. Remember the minutemen? Imagine if they had to have a waiting period as the Red Coats were approaching? OMG! (lol) Ya'll have a great day!

Historical Reality: Israel vs Gaza

There is a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal Opinion section written by Dore Gold today titled, "The Gaza-Egypt Smuggling Tunnels Must Be Closed. If you would care to learn the truth about what is really taking place today between Israel and the Gaza Strip, read Mr. Gold's article. He is currently the president of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, and he served as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in 1997-1999.

Make It Right With Him

When there are problems in our lives and we cannot put our finger on the origin of them, chances are it has something to do with something we are doing that against what is good and honest and Holy. I know many people do not believe in anything, or so they say, but I do not understand why some sound wisdom cannot help them as well. So let that be that.

When there is something we are churning over, it has an ability to harm us physically as well as mentally. That is why it is better to just confront whatever it is and you shall find Peace. That is not to say the problem will go away or it will be any easier, but you would be amazed at the weight that is lifted from upon your shoulders.

I understand this is not, per se, what you would expect to find on a milblog. I do believe that many military persons who have difficulty moving forward could benefit from someone who is a civilian yet has lived through hell and came back.

I will never know what or how you managed to survive what you have lived throught. At the same time, many people could not live the life I had and made it through. In a way, I am more alone in my experiences than you are in yours. At least you can talk to your brothers about what you've been through. After all, you were together. I traveled my road alone.

What many of you may already know is that most answers are quite simple and quite difficult. Sometimes the hard part is realizing the question. Let's try a few symptoms:

1. Lonliness. An overwhelming sense of emptiness fills the air and you find yourself not knowing why (many things).

2. Depression. It feels like the world is crushing in all around you and you can't even move to do anything about it, not that it matters.

3. Fear. No matter how many prayers you say, no matter how many times your friends tell you it's going to be okay, it just isn't. You can't walk down that street or you can't leave your house or on the other hand go into any buildings.

These are the big three that come to my mind. Many things can cause these feelings and each one is different, but they all have a basic theme. Something happened, something changed, and now something isn't right. If you don't mind, I will share with you (vaguely) what is happening in my life. This way maybe you can better understand what I am trying to share with you.

I am living sinfully, and it is eating me up alive. It has paralyzed me. I'm afraid to confront it, but my fear is unreasonable. It consumes me, yet I know I have to do this. Also, my past prevents me from running for any political office. What is the simple answer? Confront my sin, repent, turn away from it, and trust God to lead me in His plan for my life. What is the difficult thing I have to do? Confronting my sin. Doing the unknown. Leaving behind the only people who've taken care of me during all these years. I can no longer bear the weight of this sin.

I wish I had a magic wand to take away the sorrows of the world, but I don't. I do, however, know Who does. His name is Jesus Christ. If you do not have any desire to discuss Him, fine. Don't. I will not allow you to deny me my right to do so.

I shall continue to pray for all of you and if you could find a moment here or there, please pray for His strength for me to overcome my sin. Thank you.

PS. I had to write about this because it is holding me back from writing, from leaving the house, from living, from getting a lot of things done. Thanks for letting me bend your 'ear'. God bless you all.

Troops Ready To Prevent Election Violence

by John J. Kruzel
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (Jan. 12, 2009) – U.S. and Iraqi forces in Iraq’s Diyala province are preparing for rising violence amid upcoming provincial elections, an Army commander in Iraq said at a Pentagon news conference Monday. Army Col. Burt Thompson, commander of the 25th Infantry Division’s 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, said he anticipates an increase in violent activities as the Jan. 31 polling date nears. “It's pretty clear what they'd be going after,” Thompson said, referring to potential election saboteurs. “It's to sway the hearts and the minds, to intimidate those civilians from going and voting.”

An Iraqi soldier from the 2nd Battalion, 19th Brigade, 5th Division, pulls security at an abandoned school yard in Naqib. The Iraqi army is partnering with U.S. Forces to clear the villages of Naqib and Bey'a and disrupt al-Qaida networks and weapons caches in and around the Diyala province of Iraq, on Dec. 19Thompson, speaking via video teleconference from Forward Operating Base Warhorse, said Diyala province experiences about one “security incident” per week. A typical occurrence includes a bombing with homemade explosives targeting civilians in market areas. He identified members of al-Qaida and Jaysh al-Mahdi, the militant constituency of the Iranian-influenced Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, as the main perpetrators of violence in the region.

To mitigate potential threats, Thompson said, Iraqi security forces have detailed plans for securing polling sites and the routes leading to and from them. “Al-Qaida, the enemy, the opponent, obviously, has a vote. And he will look for those critical vulnerabilities, if he can find them, and he'll try to exploit those,” he said. “Our job is to prevent that from happening.”

Iraqi forces are culling “human intelligence” -- word-of-mouth information from local people -- to inform their preparations leading up to the elections. “The individuals that you talk to on the street are the greatest values, because quite frankly, most of the folks in Diyala province … want peace, they want stability, they want to move ahead, they want to get this behind them,” he said.

Thompson added that combined forces are emphasizing the security of ballots to ensure the accountability and responsibility of the process. Participants responsible for election security met for six hours yesterday ahead of a rehearsal planned for this week, Thompson said. Iraqi police will act as the “inner cordon” at voting sites and other sensitive locations, with Iraqi soldiers serving a support role as U.S. forces provide the “outer layer.”

The colonel characterized the upcoming vote as a moment of great historical and political significance for Iraq, marking the first real opportunity to seat a representative government at the provincial level.

“The 2005 election was to prove that, ‘I've got some ink on my finger, and we can actually do this election,’” he said, alluding to iconic images of Iraqis displaying ink-stained fingers indicating a ballot cast in national elections. But while the January 2005 voting represented the first general election since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, reports of widespread boycotting by Sunni Arabs called into question the vote’s legitimacy.

“The 2009 elections are a little bit different,” Thompson said. “This is an opportunity to seat governance, [which makes it] a critical period in the history of Iraq, certainly the history of Diyala, to move this place forward, to continue the growth, to continue the stability and prosperity that we're starting to see now in Diyala province.”

Iraqi Girls Reclaim Attack Site As 'Fort Of Science'

by Sgt. 1st Class Christina Bhatti
MND-B PAO

CAMP TAJI, Iraq, Jan. 8, 2009 – Some 300 girls in blue jumpers and white head scarves stood in formation on the school’s courtyard. The chill in the morning air rose in puffs as they chatted, happily anticipating the formal opening of their new school. “Today is a good day,” said Saeed Jassim Hameed al-Mashhadani, a tribal sheik in Tarmiyah, Iraq. “This day marks a beginning of education for these girls.”

The Huda Girls’ School in Tarmiyah, northwest of Baghdad, officially reopened its doors Jan. 5 in a ceremony that featured speeches, poems and songs. The school provides education to about 950 girls who attend classes at various times throughout the day.

About 300 girls stand in formation in the courtyard of the Huda Girls School in Tarmiyah, northwest of Baghdad, during the official reopening Jan. 5. The school was under renovation since 2006. A foiled terror plot set back the opening by almost a year.Built in 1982, the building first was used as dormitory, but transformed into a school for agriculture in 1995. Since then, it has transformed again into primary and high schools specializing in the sciences. “This is really something big for the people. This is a fort of science,” Muhamad Ibrihim Jassim, administrative supervisor for the Ministry of Education in Tarmiyah, said about the school’s reopening. “This is the largest school in the area.”

The Ministry of Education had long recognized the school for its excellence. That was until 2003, when it became the scene of violence during major combat operations and slowly ceased to function, said Malcom Phelps, a senior education advisor for the coalition’s embedded provincial reconstruction team attached in Multinatioonal Division Baghdad to the 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

The school, located near a joint security station, was the launching point of ambushes, homemade-bomb attacks and sniper fire against coalition forces and the then-nascent Iraqi security forces. After a cautious stability was reached in the area in 2006, soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division began projects to rebuild the badly war-damaged school.

During the process, a major terror plan was thwarted. Soldiers discovered a command wire leading from the school’s outer perimeter to one of the rooms. Inside the room, the troops discovered five artillery shell explosives. The planned insurgent attack also included two large explosive-filled propane tanks buried under the school’s floor and numerous projectiles planted under electrical conduits in front of each classroom.

“This was a major setback,” said Army 1st Lt. Erik Peterson, a civil-military affairs officer assigned to the 25th Infantry Division’s Company A, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment. “If they went off, not only would the building have been destroyed, many lives would have been lost.”

More damage was caused by removing the explosives, Peterson said. Engineer crews had to pull up the floor and take down walls brick by brick to ensure there was no longer a threat built into the structure. Eventually, those involved in the plot were captured or killed by U.S. and Iraqi forces. “Even though this was a setback, we had to try again,” Peterson said. “This is the only secondary school in the city. If it wasn’t rebuilt, there would be no place for these girls to go to school and get a good education.”

About $300,000 of Iraqi and U.S. funds were spent to rebuild and refurbish the school, which contains 18 classrooms, science labs, an administration suite and an auditorium. Now that the school is open, it faces many of the same issues plaguing the entire education system of Iraq. “We have so many students,” Jassim said, adding that the girls now go to school in shifts to help alleviate the overcrowding. “We need more buildings so we can effectively teach these students.” Peterson said more school projects are in the works, and that he hopes more schools will open soon.

More teachers also are needed, but Jassim said he is confident that problem will be solved in the coming years. “All of the teachers we currently have graduated from this school,” he said. “They belong to this area. Some of these girls will do the same thing, and we will continue to prosper like we did before the fighting.” Jassim said he is sure the area is safe now. “There is nothing more to be scared of,” he said. “These girls can come to school in peace.”

Despite the peace and stability in the area, a symbol of violence still looms in the background. Clearly visible from inside the school’s compound is the brightly colored dome of the Ghalani Mosque. This mosque is a known safe haven for terror and frequently broadcasts anti-coalition and Iraqi security messages. But Jassim said this will not deter his efforts and those of his teachers to give the students the education they deserve. “It is our duty to provide the best education possible,” he said. “We have been charged with that duty – and we will prevail.”

Taylor's Son Convicted; 97 Years

Ex-president (Charles Taylor) of Liberia's son, 'Chuckie' was convicted in October 30, 2008. He has been convicted of torture, arms trafficing, and conspiracy to torture and smuggle arms, according to a federal court in Florida. The prosection had requested 147 years in prison, but they were only to obtain 97 years. It is about time. Although he wasn't charged with the murder of any of them, his indictment alleged that he murdered at least four of ten victims.

"His case, tried in Miami, was the first brought under a 1994 U.S. law saying those accused of committing torturous acts overseas can be tried in a U.S. federal court, as long as the person is a U.S. national or is present in the United States, regardless of nationality." [Son of ex-Liberian leader sentenced to 97 years in prison, CNN]

"Taylor Jr. was tapped by his father to command an anti-terrorist unit called the ''Demon Forces'' that beat, burned and beheaded Liberian civilians from 1999 to 2003, the jury concluded.

The Miami criminal case -- which took place at the same time the father, Charles Taylor, faced a war-crimes tribunal in the Netherlands -- marked the first U.S. prosecution of torture committed in a foreign country." ['Chuckie' Taylor sentenced to 97 years in landmark torture case, by BY JAY WEAVER
jweaver AT MiamiHerald DOT com.]

(If you are interested in the CNN article, you will have to e-mail me. They seem to lose all of their articles, so I put the articles in research file.)

His father is still in the Hague waiting to be convicted on war crimes for his war crimes while he created chaos and wars while he was president of Liberia and also kept these poor people in fear for their very lives. He was captured in 2005. My, how long does it take to get over with the trial? This is one reason why I have NO faith in any of these UN phony set-ups.

I'm glad this part is finally over. It was the best we could hope for since they weren't going to impose the death penalty. They did for Nuremberg trials. Gee, we're come a long way, eh? NOT.

PS. There is a blogger who is claiming that he Chuckie was convicted of murder also. I sure as heck hope so. I have a tendency to believe this blogger more than I do the press. Why? Because CNN and the AP puts out their article, and everyone else just copies it instead of doing their own research. Yes, I received this message from CNN. That's only because they will not allow me to remove myself from their mailing list! So that's how they get their numbers! lol.

Anyway, after I get the notice from them, I google the title to find out if it's true. Then I read the other articles. Besides, as I said before, CNN has a tendency to remove their link after a certain amount of time. Oh, their articles are oh so precious! NOT. Have a nice day.

Catching Up On Videos

It must be quite apparent that I have had a difficult time of things for a few weeks, but I need to get these videos to you. They are Godly, funny, sad, they just run the mill. Enjoy.

This one is from a group I was unaware of, so do some research before you send any money, okay? GuysForLifeOrg: END OF YEAR WEBSITE.mp4. (This is the video.) 2:37

This one is fabulous, of course it is from Zo.
Macho Sauce Production: Declaration Of Dependence. 9:27

This one is from PascoGOP, and it is kind of out-dated. Only because I took so long to put it up. It's a video of Blago at a press conference the day before the music died. PascoGOP: Rob Blagojevich Press Conference A Day Before Corruption Arrest By FBI.

And that takes of that. Now I have to get busy with these CENTCOM articles! ;)

May you walk with the LORD always, and when you cannot take another step, may He carry you the rest of the way until you can walk along side Him again.

Veterinarian Aids Iraqi Farmers

by Staff Sgt. Jody Metzger
MND-B PAO

CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq (Jan. 6, 2008) – The prosperous rebuilding of Baghdad has reached far throughout the countryside, taking account of the health and welfare of the citizens. As security systems have been established, the focus of U.S. efforts in the area has shifted to aiding and building capacity in other needed areas, like agricultural and veterinary needs.

For nearly two decades, the agriculture infrastructure deteriorated due to Saddam Hussein’s rule. Oil became the county’s livelihood and Iraq depended on the value of its oil to be able to import the necessities such as food and clothing. The negligent response to their country’s needs further weakened the growth of agriculture and farming.

Capt. Suzanne Todd (left), pauses for a photo with Col. Lyle Jackson, a veterinary officer who serves with Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and an unidentified man at a poultry farm in Arbil in northern Iraq in October. Todd’s primary mission is to track veterinary and agriculture issues of the Iraqi people.Recognizing this strain on the Iraqi economy and populace, the 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, has taken special consideration of Iraq’s lack of resources by appointing Capt. Suzanne Todd, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., who serves with 425th Civil Affairs Battalion, attached to 4th Inf. Div., MND-B, as the division’s agriculture and veterinary advisor.

Well-suited for the position, Todd has degrees in international relations as well as agriculture and veterinary medicine. She acquired a bachelor’s degree in international relations from William and Mary University in Virginia. While completing her degree, Todd joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1992 at the age of 21. She became a second lieutenant as a signal corps officer in the reserves after graduating.

After spending time in the reserves, Todd decided that she wanted to go to veterinarian school with the funding help of the military. Following graduation from Michigan State with a veterinary medicine degree, Todd joined the ranks of the Army as a veterinary officer.

Although Todd has achieved a stellar education, which could provide her with a good civilian career, she always felt the need to be in the Army. “I have always wanted to be in the military. It’s kind of what I always wanted to do when I graduated, but at the time they were downsizing the active duty military, so I joined the reserves,” said Todd.

The influence to join the Army came from Todd’s mother and father who also served their country in the Army. Though they didn’t actively push for their daughter to join, they were very supportive of her decision. “My mother was an Army nurse and father was in the medical field. They had both had good experiences.”

Todd’s interests in agriculture and animals and her tenacity to follow her heart have paid off. As an adviser for MND-B, she now looks at her career field as a way to helping educate local Iraqi farmers on more advanced techniques. Her co-workers revere her hard work ethic and her expertise.

“She is a great interest to our Team,” said Lt. Col. Arnold Csan, chief of the Civil Affairs Planning Team, 4th Inf. Div., MND-B. “Since she has been here, she has gone out on missions to the vocational college and the vaccine center, both of which serve countrywide. Her focus as an agriculture expert for MND-B has been behind the largest employment of young men in Iraq.”

MND-B has marshaled a contingent of solutions and support for Iraq’s progress toward normalcy. Todd has consulted with Iraqi farmers and veterinary hospital clinics and instituted a plan to redevelop the farming infrastructure.

“One of the things they have problems with is the salinity in the soil because their traditional method of irrigation is flood irrigation. They open up the flood gates of their irrigation canals and they flood their fields with water. If there is a high salinity or salt content in the soil, which there is, that ends up in the water.”

There is a way to reclaim the land, she explained, but it takes a while to leach that salinity out of the soil. The water comes in the same way, but they have to treat it before they use it on their fields.

Since arriving in Baghdad, Todd has advised and introduced new methods of irrigation to the struggling farmers of the area such as drip and spray irrigation, along with pioneering the idea of employing a new variety of high-yield seeds.

Along with her work with the farmers and their irrigation and crop-growing needs, Todd has also done extensive work relating to the farm animals, which are equally important to the welfare and sustenance of the Iraqi people.

“If you consider agriculture, it also goes along with animal agriculture. The animals that we raise to be our food – that’s where veterinarian medicine plays a role. We as veterinarians are concerned not only about the health of livestock we grow for food but how their health impacts our health. The diseases that the animals get can impact what diseases we get – [that’s] the public health aspect.”

The mission Todd performs so effectively and passionately is yet another piece in the overall mission of the Ironhorse Division and MND-B and her work in building capacity among Iraqi farmers and farm animal producers ultimately affects the overall health of the people in and around Baghdad and their quality of life.

Iraq Assumes Authority Over FOB Callahan

MND-B PAO

AL SHA’ AB (Jan. 5, 2009) — Just days after the International Zone was returned to the Government of Iraq, Coalition forces returned Forward Operating Base Callahan to Iraqi jurisdiction, Jan. 3. FOB Callahan was the former Sha’ab Market and a strategic spot in Adhamiyah, which was taken over in 2007 as part of the surge to monitor routes and more fully secure the area.

Lt. Col. Michael Pappal hands the 'key' to FOB Callahan over to Anys Faleyeh, general manager of the Ministry of Trade, at the Sha’ab Market, Jan. 3. The ceremony symbolized Iraq’s increasing sovereignty in the Adhamiyah District of Baghdad. With the new security agreement and increased security in the area, Coalition forces seized the opportunity to return the building back to the Iraqi Ministry of Trade. “This building has been a Coalition camp since March of 2007; it was taken over during the surge, and now we’ve handed over this central shop market back to Iraqi control because of the increase of security in Adhamiyah area,” said Lt. Col. Michael Pappal, commander of the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad.

The Ministry of Trade plans to renovate the building and again use it as a market. The MoT will remove the concrete barriers surrounding it.“There are two big effects by reopening this building,” said Capt. Kevin Kahre, commander of Company D, 1-68 AR, 3rd BCT, 4th Inf. Div. “The first impact will be that traffic will be alleviated considerably by the reopening of two major roads in the area, which will afford people the opportunity to move around more freely as we take down barriers. Larger vehicles will be able to transport anything from goods to fuel more easily as well. Second, in the upcoming months, as the MoT fixes and reopens the building, it will once again be a source of income for the area.

“This building is so prominent and has been a big reminder of a U.S. presence,” Kahre said. “By leaving this building, it shows those who live here that Iraq is making progress. The move promotes a sense of normalcy, with roads and commerce restored, and will help the people see they are moving forward and American troops are complying with the security agreement.”

Kahre went on to explain how rewarding it has been for him and Soldiers who have deployed multiple times to see things come “full circle” and how good it was to see Iraqis get that part of their city back.

There are eight other markets like the one in Sha’ab, and two remain under Coalition control. “We have nine markets like this throughout Baghdad, and we’ve started the renovation plans for them. There are only two more of nine to be handed back over to us,” said Mahdi Hasaan Shihab, a Ministry of Trade employee. “It’s a happy time for us because it’s ours, and we want to utilize the Ministry of Trade to serve the people of this area and help the economy.”

O Precious Toes

Beautiful or ugly, long or short, what a treasure these tiny digits are! Imagine trying to walk without them, stand up, and so many things we take for granted...until we stub those little creeps into the metal leg of a chair and they put you out of commission!

Oh, the pain! It feels as though I broke it, but I can painfully move it. Now that it has been a few hours, I can no longer walk without excruciating pain. How can one stub their MIDDLE Toe? Well, I did it. So I give you - the 'Toe'. lol.

There is a parable in James 3:1-12 (not so much a parable as an analogy) regarding the little things that can cause so much good or so much harm. Especially the tongue. Oh my, you don't have to tell me that twice! Mine just wags when it should be still. Still practicing.

So it appears I have to trek on with my Cross to bear. No, no one else need carry my burden, but I would appreciate any prayers you can spare. ;)

May you walk with the LORD always, and when you cannot take another step, may He carry you the rest of the way until you can walk along side Him again.

Afghan, CFs Disrupt Road Side Bombers In Khost And Zabul

This is a great article which has many details that are not quite prevelant to uninformed eye, but I am very glad to see some success in the Khost area. This is a place that is really coming along well since we have been able to do some bridges, schools, and economic reconstruction. They truly appreciate our efforts. Now for the article.

From U.S. Forces - Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed five armed militants and detained ten suspected militants, including the targeted Haqqani militant and Taliban sub-commander, during multiple operations to disrupt terrorist operations in Khost and Zabul provinces, Jan. 1.

Afghan national army and coalition forces netted the targeted Haqqani facilitator during the successful combined operation that left five armed militants dead and seven suspected militants detained. In Sabari District, approximately 160 km southeast of Kabul City, the combined force targeted the Haqqani militant believed to plan and execute attacks against coalition forces in Khost province.

As the combined force approached the militant’s compound, multiple armed militants exited the buildings and attempted to maneuver on the force. Members of the combined force moved to interdict the militants and were engaged by enemy small-arms fire and hand grenades. The combined force returned fire, engaging the armed militants with small-arms and close-air precision munitions, and killed five armed militants. A search of the militants revealed several hand grenades, multiple AK-47s, pistols and other military equipment.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the combined force continued the search of the targeted building, and found three bags of roadside bomb-making material, including blasting caps, remote detonators and wires. These items were confiscated by the force to prevent future use.

The operation in Qalat District, approximately 120 km northeast of Kandahar, resulted in the capture of a Taliban sub-commander known to plan and execute roadside bombs and direct attacks against coalition forces along Highway One. He is also believed to facilitate the movement of weapons into the Zabul province for illegal activities.

Coalition forces searched the targeted compound without incident and detained two additional suspected militants while protecting nine women and 20 children.

“Coalition forces and our partners in the Afghan national army will continue to aggressively pursue road side bombers and those who would bring harm to the Afghan people,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson. “The best weapon against these criminals is the active involvement from the Afghan people.”

There are 6 new bridges being constructed to all the eastern side of the province do business and communicate with each other more easily. There is a river that divides them. Well, it may not be a river, I'm not quite sure in my recollection, but there is at least a divide. They are also educting their children with new schools that have been constructed, and there are many more projects which the Mayor has planned.

They want to help us to help them because they do not want to live under the Taliban or al Qaida, no more than we do! We must not forget about these people. If we don't help them, who will?

Navy Captain Crusades Against Brain Injuries In Anbar

Sgt. G.P. Ingersoll has written a very intriguing and promising article about a possible new way to treat traumatic brain injuries (TBI). This could mean the difference between 100% recovery versus a carreer killing injury. Please read this, it really is promising. I know because I have TBI (not from combat). This could be a huge breakthrough, thanks to Capt. Michael H. Hoffer.

If you choose to reprint any of this article, all I ask is that you give Sgt. Ingersoll full credit for his article. The only changes I have made are to the beginning and end of the paragraphs. No words have been changed. Have a great day!

By. Sgt. G.P. Ingersoll
1st Marine Logistics Group Public Affairs

AL TAQADDUM, Iraq – His crusade spanned two years. He travelled to triages and hospitals across Anbar in 2006. He worked tirelessly with his stateside colleagues in 2007. Two years of toiling all to gather enough evidence, or “data” as he calls it, to make his case.

Now, back in Iraq, Navy Capt. Michael H. Hoffer feels he has won a significant victory against arguably the military’s most serious and common casualty: Traumatic Brain Injury. Traumatic Brain Injuries, or TBI’s, occur when an individual experiences shock waves from a blast, acceleration-deceleration (collision), or an impact or penetration directly to the skull. Doctors divide TBI into severe, moderate or mild. “Right now, 92 percent of all battlefield injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan are classified as [mild] TBI,” said Hoffer, Otolaryngologist (the ears, nose and throat physician), Surgical Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion (-) (Reinforced), 1st Marine Logistics Group.

A recent study conducted by the Rand Corporation concluded that 20 percent of all service members who have deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan have at least mild TBI. “Now imagine what the rate is amongst infantry … we do have a problem,” said Hoffer. “So we recognized the fact that although we’re set up to do ‘blood and guts’ surgery, [Taqaddum Surgical] can take on a secondary mission.”

Taqaddum Surgical’s secondary mission: the Theater TBI Center of Excellence. The center, a result of Hoffer’s two-year initiative, is the first of its kind here in Anbar. It was established initially in September and finalized as the province’s hub of TBI treatment in December. With the cooperation of corpsmen on the ground and company commanders, the center now rehabilitates every casualty who experiences events associated with causing TBI.

Now if Marines experience a blast of any size, or a collision, crews medevac them to Camp Taqaddum for immediate treatment. “So what we have here are experts who see these blast injury patients within 24 hours of the injury,” said Hoffer, 42, San Diego. Once patients arrive, doctors administer a battery of tests to make a diagnosis. An audiometer, or hearing test, determines the state of the patient’s inner ear. A challenged, or dynamic, gait test, kind of like a more complex version of a roadside sobriety test, provides trained doctors with indications of TBI. Cognitive skills exercises, like memory quizzes and timed maze completions, round off the tests.

Early diagnosis is critical, said Hoffer, and the biggest obstacle to early diagnosis is actually Marines themselves. “Someone’s got to protect the Marines against themselves, you know, even if they have a sucking chest wound, they would put something on it and keep going,” said Hoffer. “So a Marine gets blasted, denies it, and then he gets back to [the states] and the wife sends him out for cheese and coffee, and he comes back with eggs and milk.”

Hoffer said oftentimes wives refer their husbands to medical for dizziness or forgetfulness, resulting from mild TBI. “Marines are a tremendously brave bunch, in some ways it takes more courage to say ‘yes I had an impact’ … rather than deny it and have effects that are long term,” said Hoffer.

Mild TBI’s, more commonly known as concussions, worry doctors the most. Moderate or severe TBI’s are usually accompanied by other injuries which require patients to receive treatment in the states. Mild TBIs frequently go unnoticed or unreported because their severity is not immediately recognized. Left untreated, long term effects of mild TBI could end a Marine’s career, said Hoffer.

“There are 2,500 people at Balboa [Medical Center] who have [symptoms and effects] from mild TBI, six to nine months after the blast,” said Hoffer.

The number of people isn’t what troubles Hoffer, it’s the amount of time wasted prior to proper diagnosis and rehabilitation. “The earlier we start, the quicker we cure it, and the less long term effects,” said Hoffer.

Past treatments have shown that patients who sought care within three to six weeks of the causal event made a full recovery in six weeks. Patients who received treatment 11 months after the event took significantly longer, at 16 weeks, to feel better. “If we could see patients [within] 24 hours [of the event], I bet I could get them better in two weeks,” said Hoffer.

Quicker recovery time isn’t the only benefit to early reporting. Whereas late patients on average only recovered to approximately 85 percent normalcy, patients seen immediately tend to recover to 100 percent normalcy, said Hoffer. Not to mention that their careers can continue as if nothing ever happened.

“The effects that are long term, they really prevent you from ever going back to the fight,” said Hoffer. “This program allows Marines to continue serving in the Corps.”

Hoffer said once patients are diagnosed, a treatment is designed based on the symptoms they exhibit. Not all TBIs affect the same parts of the brain, so treatments, though somewhat standard, deviate from each other based on what each patient needs.

Hoffer also introduced a new TBI rehabilitation treatment, which is in its test phase, but may also prove to be somewhat preventative. “When a brain cell dies, it releases oxygen free radicals and these free radicals attack nearby cells,” said Hoffer. So initial damage worsens steadily over time.

“A cell has its own outside defense against invaders, but [in the case of TBI] it’s like a platoon sized defense against a brigade,” said Hoffer. “If we put in antioxidants, we increase that cell’s natural defenses.” At least that’s the theory. Hoffer is staging the first ever double-blind, placebo-controlled test performed in Iraq here at the center to gather evidence that antioxidants improve recovery from TBI symptoms.

If proven effective, they could be issued to corpsmen to give to Marines immediately following an event, and therapy could start immediately, said Hoffer. Hoffer’s efforts, along with the efforts of his colleagues, have improved the well- being of Marines in Iraq.

“Mild TBI robs us of a Marine’s full capabilities and has a dramatic effect on the lives of affected Marines and their families,” said Brig. Gen. Robert R. Ruark, commanding general, 1st MLG. Ruark, 48, Salem, Ohio, said not only the quality of a Marine’s life, but the quality of the Corps itself improves as doctors like Hoffer refine their treatment of TBI.

Since the center has opened, 40 patients have received treatment. Thirty-five have returned to finish their deployments, 100 percent recovered. “Service members evaluated by Capt. Hoffer get state-of-the-art treatment and evaluation, and are put on the path to rapid recovery,” said Cmdr. Joseph F. Penta, group surgeon, Surgical Co., 1st Maintenance Bn. (-) (Reinforced), 1st MLG.

Penta, 38, San Clemente, Calif., said although the center is a victory, the crusade is far from over. “Our next goal is to expand mTBI treatment centers to other locations in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Penta.

US Turns Control Of IZ Over To Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, (Jan. 1, 2009) – The United States formally transferred the Republican Palace back to the Iraqi government today, a concrete symbol of the continuing improvement in the country. The transfer came about as the status of forces agreement between the United States and Iraq took effect.

The agreement replaces the United Nations mandate under which the coalition went into Iraq and has conducted operations there since. Under the agreement, Iraqi forces are now in the lead with U.S. forces in a supporting role or in overwatch. Officials said that American troops are still on duty at some of the checkpoints in Green Zone, but they are there to train their Iraqi counterparts rather than with operational control.

“When you come up to a checkpoint, the Iraqis will check your identification. They will make the decision if you come in or go out, ” said Army Maj. Gen. Dave Perkins, U.S. spokesman in Iraq. As a colonel, Perkins led the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division that conducted the "Thunder Run" in April 2003 that first entered Baghdad.

"We will continue to be there to provide some technical capacity, to provide some mentoring, but you will see less and less American forces and more and more Iraqi forces – and they will have the majority of the responsibility for making those key decisions which determine the security of the capital,” Perkins said.

The American effort has shifted down the river to the embassy. The new embassy – the largest U.S. embassy in the world – is open for business. Officials at the embassy are working with the Iraqis in detailing how other portions of the status of forces agreement will play out.

Iraqi security forces have made tremendous gains over the past 18 months, officials in Baghdad said. The U.S. surge of five brigades into Iraq that began in January 2007 brought security and stability to the country. Behind this, the Iraqi army and police were able to develop and train. The agreement recognizes this progress and now Iraqi forces have primary responsibility for security in the country.

The agreement also calls for all American combat troops to be out of cities and villages by June. Planning is underway for this move already, U.S. officials in Baghdad said. The agreement says all U.S. troops will be out of Iraq by the end of 2011.

The transfer of responsibility for security of the Green Zone is the most visible outcome of the agreement. The palace on the banks of the Tigris River was the seat of the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein. U.S. servicemembers called the building the “three-headed palace” because of three huge busts of Saddam that decorated it.

Soon after American soldiers rolled into Baghdad, the palace became the headquarters of the coalition forces in the country. It also served as the U.S. embassy in the country. While spared any direct attack in the “shock and awe” campaign in March 2003, the building still had no glass in the windows and American soldiers bunked in some of the rooms decorated with pictures of missiles and other portrayals of Saddam’s might.

The palace became the hub of the Coalition Provisional Authority – the coalition group that ruled Iraq before the first government. U.S. Ambassador Paul Bremer transferred sovereignty back to the Iraqis in a ceremony at the palace in June 2004. The grounds behind the palace was filled with hundreds of trailers that coalition officials lived in as they worked with Iraqi governmental departments.

"A government ought to contain in itself every power requisite to the full accomplishment of the objects commmitted to its care, and to the complete execution of the trusts for which it is responsible, free from every other control but a regard to the public good and to the sense of the people."

Since Israel has finally decided to fight back against the Arabs who've been lobbing rockets inside Israel everyday and kidnapping Israelis when the opportunity presents itself, NOW the world has a fit. One question. Where were you when the Arabs were assaulting them DISPROPORTIONATEY?

In the 2005, there were forcibly (against my advice) no more Jewish people living within the Gaza Strip. They left behind many greenhouses for the Arabs to grow food so they would not be starving. Do you know what they did? They went in and destroyed everything. These Arabs do NOT want peace. Have you already forgotten September 11, 2001?

Anyway, my point is this. You will not receive any news that is factual unless you watch these videos. Israel gave live footage to the press, and they never even bothered using it. What they did do was show you the jihadis footage. Amazing how so many people were injured, yet they only had one boy to show you! It reminds me of the guy who supposedly dead and kept falling of the burial cot. Yup, he kept getting back up on it. Amazing what those dead Arabs can do!

Here is a list of several videos of live footage. Please watch them so you can obtain an accurate account of history. Thanks.

Just one more note. Israel, be kind. It is not kind to start and stop, start and stop a war. What is kind is to defeat your enemy with massive force and total defeat. This is a so-called government, right? They must surrender. Without a surrender, you will only be encouraging them to continue doing what they are doing.

Forget about public opinion. You can't eat it. You can't spend it. And sure as heck can't spend it. Do what is necessary, as we did in Germany and Japan. I am not ashamed of what we did, because we saved many more lives by killing so massively that the emporor of Japan surrendered totally and completely. They are now our allies. I prefer it this way, but it never would have happened unless WE won...so be disproportionate. Win. I shall be praying for you.

Hmm. It appears that I am too brutally honest when I describe our history. There is someone I know who shall remain nameless (because I don't have his/her permission to reprint this) that wrote me about this very topic in general. I'd like to use his/her words insteads.

"...As a basic principle - if there is to be any response at all - it should always be disproportionate. Anything less means you don't care. How disproportionate? How much can you do? Maximum force is counterintuitive kindness. It breaks the enemy's will sooner, stopping the slaughter earlier. It is kindness to be cruel."

"Let me also suggest that terrorism is like a tumor. Excising only part of it is worse than doing nothing - it inflicts the stress of surgery but does not eradicate the malignancy, which will grow back
."

May you walk with the LORD always, and when you cannot take another step, may He carry you the rest of the way until you can walk along side Him again.

"Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve."

--Benjamin Franklin, Autobiography, 1771

If only our so-called leaders could, woould, bother to remember these words of wisdom and understand why they are wise.
