Pakistan navy inducts two U.S.-provided maritime patrol planes

U.S. Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan (June 1, 2010) – In an induction ceremony held today at PNS Mehran, Karachi, U.S. and Pakistani officials commemorated the delivery of two P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft to the Government of Pakistan from the United States.

The aircraft will enhance the Pakistan Navy’s maritime patrol operations. Approximately 250 U.S. and Pakistani officials attended the ceremony, including Pakistan Chief of Naval Staff, ADM Noman Bashir, U.S. Consul General Steve Faken, and U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Michael Nagata.

“The delivery of these aircraft to Pakistan demonstrates the U.S. Government’s commitment to a long-term, strategic partnership with Pakistan—one based on shared interests and mutual respect, that will continue to expand and deepen in future years,” Nagata said.

The aircraft were transferred to the Pakistan Navy during a ceremony in Jacksonville, Fla., on April 30, and flown to Pakistan by U.S. and Pakistan Navy aircrews. By 2012, the Pakistan Navy will receive a total of eight P-3C aircraft. During the last three years, U.S. civilian and security assistance to Pakistan has totaled more than $4 billion. Assistance has included support for medical aid, school refurbishment, bridge and well reconstruction, food distribution, agricultural and education projects.

Specific security assistance includes 14 F-16 fighter aircraft, 10 Mi-17 and two Bell 412EP helicopters, five fast patrol boats, 115 Howitzer self-propelled field artillery cannons, more than 450 vehicles for Pakistan’s Frontier Corps, hundreds of night vision goggles, day/night scopes, radios, and thousands of protective vests and first-aid items for Pakistan’s security forces.

The U.S. also provided training for more than 370 Pakistani military officers in a wide range of leadership and development programs covering topics such as counterterrorism, intelligence, logistics, medical, flight safety, and military law.

SK To Blame NK For Torpedoing SK Ship

Oh joy. Nothing to see here. They are going to the UN to hold North Korea accountable for torpedoing South Koreans ship back in March.

Answer me this. Is North Korea not under all the sanctions there is already? Why are we even bothering to talk to these warmongers?

Here is my plan: Quietly go block by block in Seoul, South Korea and relocate the 20.5 million people that live there, and then bomb the hell out of Kim Jong Il's house, government places, electrical grids (if there is any), radio transmission places, train tracks, roads, air power, and nuclear weapons sites. PERIOD.

You may read about this in the National Review Online by Daniel Foster: ROK Officially Blames PDRK for Warship Attack.

"The Washington Post reports:
South Korea will formally blame North Korea on Thursday for launching a torpedo at one of its warships in March, causing an explosion that killed 46 sailors and heightened tensions in one of the world's most perilous regions, U.S. and East Asian officials said.

South Korea reached its conclusion that North Korea was responsible for the attack after investigators from Australia, Britain, Sweden and the United States pieced together portions of the ship at the port of Pyongtaek, 40 miles southwest of Seoul. The Cheonan sank on March 26, following an explosion that rocked the vessel as it sailed in the Yellow Sea off South Korea's west coast.

Pentagon to supply Shadow UAVs to Pakistan

by Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Jan. 22, 2010) – The United States plans to provide Pakistan RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicles to support their fight on extremists, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates confirmed today during a roundtable session with Pakistani reporters.

The United States has been working with the Pakistani military for more than a year to enhance its own ISR capabilities, Gates said. “We share a lot of information that we acquire on the Afghan side of the border and from our satellites, but we also are trying to help the Pakistanis build their own capabilities.”

In addition to the drones themselves, the United States also will provide training and other capabilities required to “coordinate these platforms and be able to get the maximum possible value out of them,” Gates said.

The secretary first alluded to the new initiative last night, during an interview with Pakistani television reporters, but did not specifically mention the Shadow models, or the fact that a decision had been made about providing them, until today.

A senior defense official traveling with Gates told reporters the United States will provide 12 of the unarmed aircraft to help Pakistan in its offensive on extremists.
“We are trying to do everything we can to assist Pakistan in the fight in the west,” Gates told reporters today.

Funding would come from congressionally appropriated counter-insurgency funds Gates said enable the Defense Department to quickly provide equipment or training to help the Pakistanis in the fight.

Shadow UAVs are extremely popular within the U.S. Army, providing warfighters better situational awareness in their operations. They are relatively small, with a 14-foot wingspan, and have an ability to oversee specific sites and feed video images.

Ambassador, general discuss Iraq elections, Iran relations

by Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD (Dec. 19, 2009) – Iraq “is not going to be pushed around” by Iran, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill said here Saturday.

Hill and Gen. Ray Odierno, the commander of Multil-National Force - Iraq, spoke to reporters traveling with Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Army Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of Multi-National Force - Iraq, and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill speak to the media at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, on Dec. 19.Iranians moved onto a disputed oil well in southern Iraq and placed an Iranian flag on the facility. They have since left the facility, which is clearly in Iraqi territory. “It['s] like a game of capture the flag,” said an American spokesman in southern Iraq yesterday. “It has been going on for years.”

“This is not something new, and it’s been dealt with in a good manner by the Iraqis,” Odierno said. “They contacted the Iranians and they just left.”

The general said Iran and Iraq has disputed this oil well since 1975.

Odierno spoke about the security portion of the agreement between Iraq and the United States that calls for all U.S. troops to leave the country at the end of 2011.

“We can do security operations in Iraq through the end of 2011,” he said. “But what we’ve done is, President Obama has made the decision that we will end combat operations on 1 September 2010. The bottom line is the Iraqis are doing a very good job of security.”

The number of incidents in the country is the lowest its been since 2003 and normalcy has returned for most citizens. “What’s happening though is that al-Qaida has changed from a broad-based insurgency to a covert terrorist organization that is attempting to conduct high-profile attacks to go after the legitimacy of the government of Iraq,” Odierno said. Al-Qaida wants to attack the government and disrupt the elections now set for March 7.

Iranian influence in Iraq is a question. For the elections, Iran has “some ideas of how the Shias should be organized,” Hill said. “I don’t think the Iranians have prevailed in their view, I think the Iraqis will do it the way they plan to do it.”

The Iraqis worked their way painfully through the Election Law, “but ultimately it was an Iraqi solution,” Hill said.

Odierno said that Iran continues to train surrogates and send weapons and ammunition across the border. “It’s less tha[n] what it was, but they are still doing it,” Odierno said

Task force to focus on Afghan IED threat

by Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Nov. 12, 2009) – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has created a new task force to enhance existing department efforts to counter the threat from roadside bombs, the No. 1 killer in Afghanistan.

Gates announced the new task force today, and said he expects its members to spend the next six months reporting to him about the best way to deal with the improvised explosive device threat in Afghanistan.

The task force will be co-chaired by Ashton Carter, undersecretary for acquisition, technology and logistics; and Marine Lt. Gen. John M. “Jay” Paxton Jr., the Joint Staff’s operations chief. It will integrate work by the Joint IED Defeat Organization and the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and acquisition communities, Gates said.

The task force also will work directly with Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, and other ground commanders.

Gates noted broad efforts already under way throughout the department, but said he hopes the task force will cut through organizational stovepipes to make them more effective.

“We have people working all these different pieces,” he said. “My concern is whether all this has been properly integrated and prioritized and aligned, and whether we are adaptable and agile enough.”

Gates said he has tasked the new body “to make sure we have integrated all the capabilities we have to go after this challenge,” he said. “And if they identify a need for something new, then so we can go get it and get it into the hands of the troops and the commanders.”

The goal is to ensure the military has the same level of capabilities in Afghanistan that it has built in Iraq, he said. These include not just counter-IED measures, but also forensics labs and analytical capabilities to help identify and track terrorist networks that build and emplace them.

“The whole purpose of this, really, is to make sure we get the troops what they need to protect themselves, and also the tools to be more effective in taking down these networks,” he said.

Gates already has sent the new task force a job: to analyze lessons the Mujahadeen learned when it used the same kinds of IEDs being used today against U.S. troops as in its struggle against the Soviet Union three decades ago.

“So let’s go back and look at the playbook they used against the Soviets to see if there is something we have learned in terms of adapting our tactics, techniques and procedures,” he said.

Osprey joins the fight in Afghanistan

by Cpl. Thomas Hermesman
2nd MEB

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand province, Afghanistan (Nov. 5, 2009) – In another history-making moment for Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, the first MV-22B Ospreys entered the Task Force Leatherneck area of operations today, alighting in three waves at Camp Bastion Airfield.

Making the long journey from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Bataan in the Indian Ocean to the Bastion Airfield in the Helmand desert, the 10 tiltrotor aircraft are the first of their kind to operate in Afghanistan.

The unique design of the Osprey allows for not only vertical takeoff, but conversion to fixed-wing flight at much faster speeds than helicopters.

"I am very excited to have these new birds here," said Lt. Col. William Depue, executive officer for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced), adding that the aircraft's increased speed and range will "cut the size of the area of operations in half."

The Ospreys, which formed the bulk of VMM-263 (Rein) with the 22nd MEU will join Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261 as part of MEB-Afghanistan's aviation combat element, Marine Aircraft Group 40.

"Although we are not the Marines who will operate these birds here, we were happy to be a part of getting them into theater," said Depue.

The Ospreys will be used for medium-lift assault support, transporting troops and cargo throughout the MEB's area of operations, and will augment the other fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft that have worked tirelessly since the MEB's arrival in Afghanistan in May, flying more than 19,000 hours.

PHOTO: After making the long flight from the USS Bataan in the Indian Ocean the MV-22B 'Osprey' makes history entering Afghanistan and the Helmand province for the first time ever. Adding these aircraft to the rotary wing arsenal already in use by the Marine Aircraft Group 40, will further its capabilities in moving Marines and equipment around the Taskforce Leatherneck area of operation.

Smacking Allies In The Face Isn't Healthy

Right now I am so frustrated and angry (ie. frightened) that I am going to refer you to the article I just read in the Wall Street Journal opinion section. I don't know if I can withstand another 9/11/2001. Can you?

Here is the link. Please read this so you know what I am talking about. Talking about "chickens coming home to roost'! This is going to make us more vulnerable, not safe.

Since when does the Commie state of the USSR get a veto over whether we put defensive missiles wherever we need them? Oh, Obama, if you only knew how weak you appear to the entire world. These commies invade Georgia, you want them to sit down and talk. If someone invades my apartment, they're dead. There will be no time for talking. If they were not invited and I don't know them, they are there for one reason and isn't a good one.

You have smacked all of our allies in the face, pretty hard I might add, while at the same time trying to make friends with our enemies. Have you given it ANY thought as to why they are our enemies? Could it be they hate our Republic? Yes, it could. And they love your weakness and feeble mind.

Please remember that you are president of the United States and us alone. Your job is to protect us. If anything happens to us while you are president, I will blame you without forgiveness. What you have done by snatching away our agreement with Poland and the Czech Republic is unconscionable. Please rethink your decision.

Until then, Tea Party On! Also, Congresswoman Richardson (CA-D) of the 37th district was found to be one of the 15 most corrupt people in Congress, but I cannot find the source for that statement. That leaves me with a very difficult question. Should I run for Congress? How do I start an exploratory thingy. (Is that grass roots enough for ya? haha.) Please let me know what you think. It takes money which I don't have. But it also takes passion to do the right thing which I do have. I'll be waiting for your input.

May you walk with the LORD always, and when you cannot take another step, may He carry you the rest of the way until you can walk along side Him again.

Troops capture key Taliban leaders

CJTF 82 Public Affairs.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD (Aug. 31, 2009) – Afghan forces and NATO-led International Security Assistance troops captured two key Taliban leaders, including a commander, during a joint operation in the Kanday village of Chapa Dara district in Afghanistan’s Kunar province Aug. 29.

Qari Azimullah is a Taliban commander in the district, and has been directly linked to several roadside-bomb attacks in the province, one of which resulted in the recent death of a U.S. servicemember.

A second captured man is another suspected Taliban leader in the area who also has been linked to bombings in Kunar province, officials said.

Two additional men were detained. A large weapons cache, including a suicide vest and bomb-making materials, was seized during the operation.

Afghan and ISAF troops protected several women and children who were nearby during the operation when insurgents began firing weapons at troops in the village. No civilians, Afghan troops or ISAF soldiers were killed or injured during the operation, officials said.

Somali Pirates Fire on Navy Helicopter

Office of the Secretary of Defense Public Affairs.

WASHINGTON - Somali pirates aboard a hijacked ship fired at a U.S. Navy helicopter yesterday, Navy officials said.

According to the Navy, the helicopter from the USS Chancellorsville was not hit, and there were no injuries. The helicopter did not return fire.

The chopper received fire while on a surveillance flight over a Taiwanese-flagged vessel that pirates had captured in April. Footage taken from the SH-60B helicopter shows at least one pirate opening fire with what appears to be "a large-caliber weapon," officials said.

Somali pirates hijacked the Taiwanese-flagged Win Far vessel, April 6, and since have used it as a "mother ship" to conduct attacks, most notably on the U.S.-flagged Maersk-Alabama in April. The incident occurred in the Indian Ocean south of Garacad, Somalia, where the Win Far is anchored.

During the flight, the aircrew members observed pirate activity, but did not confirm they were fired on until their return to Chancellorsville and review of the infrared surveillance footage. The helicopter was about 3,000 yards from Win Far when it happened.

END

Okay, I have some questions that I hope you Vets and Active Duty guys and gals can help me with. Number one, what kind of a weapon can do damage to our helicopers 3000 yards away? Number two, why did they not shoot back? Was it for the safety of the Tiewanese captives? Do you really think they're still alive? Why don't we just take that ship back?

There are many things I do not understand about this. Is it President Obama's policy not to do anything? Oh, wouldn't want to disturb any of his 'friends'. This sure is frustrating. Thanks.

Special Operations Forces Save Lives After Bomb Attack

Armed Forces Press Service

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 11, 2009 – As soon as they heard the news of the suicide bombers yesterday, a coalition Special Operations team in southern Afghanistan sprang into action.

The team rescued, treated and medically evacuated 19 civilians after two suicide bombers detonated themselves in the Gereshk bazaar in Helmand province, injuring 20 and killing nine. Six of the victims killed by the suicide bombers were Afghan National Policemen and Afghan soldiers.

“Yesterday afternoon, two suicide [improvised explosive devices] were used against the [Afghan National Police] in Gereshk,” said a team leader with Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan. “There was an ambush from a vehicle and motorcycles, coordinated with a suicide IED on the taxi station/ANP checkpoint.”

The initial attack occurred on the outskirts of the Gereshk bazaar, the team leader said. An Afghan police Special Weapons and Tactics unit responded to the suicide attack, secured the area and loaded the wounded into their trucks. They began to move the wounded to a local hospital on the opposite side of the bazaar.

“While they slowed down to move through the bazaar, a second suicide bomber stepped out in the middle of the first and second vehicles in the convoy and detonated,” the team leader said. “The suicide bomber had posted himself in a mosque downtown in the bazaar.”

Coalition personnel acted as a quick reaction force after the second explosion. They moved into the area, secured it and medics began providing emergency care for the injured. The casualties were loaded up and brought to a nearby coalition firebase for treatment and medical evacuation.

At the site of the explosion, 20 people, including civilians, Afghan police and Afghan soldiers were wounded in the attacks. Nine people, including three shoppers at the bazaar, were killed.

Some of the casualties were taken to a British-run hospital in Helmand province, some to Dutch- and U.S.-run hospitals in Oruzgan province, and some were taken for treatment at Kandahar Airfield, according to the doctor.

The status of the wounded is unknown. In accordance with Islamic tradition, the dead were returned to their families for burial as quickly as possible.

“The militants continue to show their total disregard for the lives of the Afghan people,” a coalition spokesperson said. “Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of the Afghan and coalition medical personnel, we were able to save lives, despite this heinous act.”

Sea Of Japan Could Go From Cold To Hot In A Ballistic Moment

Those pesky North Koreans. They insist they are only going to launch a satellite into space on this rocket they plan to launch between April 4-8. Ha! So says the Navy.

We do not trust these lying cretins and with good reason. They are liars. They have yet to keep their word on anything they agree to, so you can see why we are skeptical.

As of this moment, CNN is reporting that "[t]he USS Hopper, a destroyer with the Aegis radar system aboard was scheduled for a port call in Japan in coming days, [b]ut the port call was canceled and the ship will remain in the Sea of Japan ahead of the launch, the official said."

There are two other destroyers, the USS McCain and the USS Chaffee, that will be in the waters near South Korea.

There are usually destroyers with Aegis-capability in the Sea of Japan due to North Korea's belligerence, so this is not new. What is new is that plans have been changed because of this North Korean launch. They have launched long-range missiles over the island of Japan and near the island, and Japan was angry when those incidents occurred.

So you can see why Japan and the US may feel a little hesitant to believe anything that shrimp leader of North Korea has to say. If he does decide to launch this missile, President Obama has 5 minutes or less to decide whether this is a dangerous launch or not, and he will have to give the order to shoot it down or leave it alone. Let us pray he makes the correct decision. There are people counting on us to do so. All politics aside...

NK Has Nukes; Demands On USA

It is being reported by many news outlets that North Korea now has between 4 and 7 'weaponized' nuclear weapons. The IAEA is not allowed to inspect these areas, and they now believe they have a better chance of obtaining 'friendly' and 'normalized' relations with the USA because of Obama.

For all of you people who voted for him, I would like to thank you so very freaking much. Did we not warn you of this? Oh, but your hatred for President Bush was so fierce that you lost your minds. You must have. We are at war, and you deny this fact. We cannot allow this puny punk to push around, lest others begin to think they can do the same. Oh, but you got what you, didn't ya. I hope it was worth it to you. I also hope that if there is a nuclear strike, the weapon is aimed at you.

Afghan, CFs Disrupt Road Side Bombers In Khost And Zabul

This is a great article which has many details that are not quite prevelant to uninformed eye, but I am very glad to see some success in the Khost area. This is a place that is really coming along well since we have been able to do some bridges, schools, and economic reconstruction. They truly appreciate our efforts. Now for the article.

From U.S. Forces - Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed five armed militants and detained ten suspected militants, including the targeted Haqqani militant and Taliban sub-commander, during multiple operations to disrupt terrorist operations in Khost and Zabul provinces, Jan. 1.

Afghan national army and coalition forces netted the targeted Haqqani facilitator during the successful combined operation that left five armed militants dead and seven suspected militants detained. In Sabari District, approximately 160 km southeast of Kabul City, the combined force targeted the Haqqani militant believed to plan and execute attacks against coalition forces in Khost province.

As the combined force approached the militant’s compound, multiple armed militants exited the buildings and attempted to maneuver on the force. Members of the combined force moved to interdict the militants and were engaged by enemy small-arms fire and hand grenades. The combined force returned fire, engaging the armed militants with small-arms and close-air precision munitions, and killed five armed militants. A search of the militants revealed several hand grenades, multiple AK-47s, pistols and other military equipment.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the combined force continued the search of the targeted building, and found three bags of roadside bomb-making material, including blasting caps, remote detonators and wires. These items were confiscated by the force to prevent future use.

The operation in Qalat District, approximately 120 km northeast of Kandahar, resulted in the capture of a Taliban sub-commander known to plan and execute roadside bombs and direct attacks against coalition forces along Highway One. He is also believed to facilitate the movement of weapons into the Zabul province for illegal activities.

Coalition forces searched the targeted compound without incident and detained two additional suspected militants while protecting nine women and 20 children.

“Coalition forces and our partners in the Afghan national army will continue to aggressively pursue road side bombers and those who would bring harm to the Afghan people,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson. “The best weapon against these criminals is the active involvement from the Afghan people.”

There are 6 new bridges being constructed to all the eastern side of the province do business and communicate with each other more easily. There is a river that divides them. Well, it may not be a river, I'm not quite sure in my recollection, but there is at least a divide. They are also educting their children with new schools that have been constructed, and there are many more projects which the Mayor has planned.

They want to help us to help them because they do not want to live under the Taliban or al Qaida, no more than we do! We must not forget about these people. If we don't help them, who will?

Air Assault: Locate Enemies, Connect With Villagers

by Sgt. Zach Otto
CJTF-101

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Dec. 6, 2008) – There are many villages within Afghanistan that are spread out among vast mountains and dusty valleys. Locating these villages is simple, yet conducting searches and talking with the residents that live there is complicated due to the harsh terrain. Soldiers need to be flown into these areas, into and through highly hostile environments to secure, search and talk with people in these villages.

Soldiers from Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Currahee, load up in a helicopter to head back to base after completing an operation near Spera in south-west Khowst province, Afghanistan, Nov. 21. During the operation they searched for weapons as well as search for key Taliban leaders within the area.Soldiers from 3rd and 4th Platoon, Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, Combined Task Force Currahee, along with Afghan National Army soldiers and Afghan National Police conducted an air assault in a village in Khowst province. “The point of an air assault is to catch the enemy off guard,” said Spc. Philip Sanders, a line medic. “We can enter an area much faster by helicopter.”

Once initial security was set up, the platoon leaders took control and began the operation. Some Soldiers took high ground to help provide over watch of the village while the main force conducted searches throughout the village. “I was to control my fire team, maneuver them to set up security and control their fire,” said Sgt. Bruce Hunter, the platoon’s 2nd squad leader.

The first few houses promised that this air assault would be a rewarding one. The ANP discovered various munitions within the first search.

As darkness fell, Soldiers slept among the rocks on top of a mountain ridge while rotating guard shifts for security. At first sunlight, everyone was up and moving to keep warm in the sub-freezing weather. The Soldiers set out over and around steep mountains in order to reach the second village. “I’m happy the way the guys are adapting to mountain warfare,” Hunter said, a native of Carbondale, Ill. “It’s challenging carrying heavy gear up in the mountains during extreme weather.”

Once the Soldiers arrived at the second objective they set up security and preparing for the village to be searched. While houses were being searched, the leadership within the platoons talked with the locals and established relationships with the elders. Building relationships is a vital step in economic growth for the people of Afghanistan. “With the ANP leading the search, everything went smoothly,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Goodall, a section leader with 4th platoon. “We had the opportunity to talk with the locals and improve the local’s view of us.”

The search of the second village revealed little. The ANP confiscated dynamite from one home. All munitions from both days’ searches were properly disposed of. By air assaulting into desolate locations Soldiers not only maintain the element of surprise but it provides them with the ability to reach villagers who do not receive much contact. The searches of the villages in the area did not result in much, however the Soldiers achieved much more by talking to the local people.

During the training they learned level three and level four bomb disposal skills. Many of the Soldiers graduated, Feb. 1, 2006, and started working with Coalition forces.

Initially, the Iraqi soldiers worked alongside the Coalition forces watching how coalition forces handled the various situations. As the Iraqi soldiers obtained more experience they started working together assisting with hands-on training. Eventually the BDC Soldiers started doing the work on their own with the coalition forces watching and advising.

“We follow them out on missions with the Military Transition Team support,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff Crocker, explosive ordinance device team leader for the Iraqi army, Bomb Disposal Company. “We actually observe them conducting missions and then give them on-the-spot corrections if and when necessary.”

Since October this BDC has been working on their own and has completed 54 missions without assistance from Coalition forces. The IA unit has the capability to do post-blast assessments and conduct them when necessary, Crocker said. The purpose of a post-blast assessment is to get a better picture of what happened, who caused the blast and how it was done.

This BDC has the training, the equipment and the personnel to get the job done right, said the IA lieutenant colonel and commander of the BDC. It is one of the best companies in the IA, because of the training they received in the streets from the Coalition forces, the on-the-job-training. They also feel very safe working in the streets because of the equipment and knowledge of how to use it.

“They are able to teach anyone who wants to learn and get the life experience they have,” said the BDC commander. During some of the BDC’s operations they have already been able to share what they learned from the Coalition forces with other divisions throughout the IA, said the BDC commander. The IA unit is able to teach safer ways to disarm explosives and how to use the additional equipment available.

CJTF-HOA, IMATC Partner To Teach Safe De-Mining Practices

By Master Sergeant Stan Parker
Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 9, 2008 — To many, Kenya invokes thoughts of a rich culture, friendly people, and the wonders of a safari. Few people realize that Kenya is also home to a center whose mission is to train people worldwide in the process of safe de-mining in affected countries.

The International Mine Action Training Center (IMATC), which opened in the outskirts on Nairobi in February, 2005, is a partnership between the British and Kenyan armed forces and includes personnel from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. IMATC aims to alleviate suffering caused by landmines and to provide training on safe demining techniques. Landmines are a daily threat in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iraq, Somalia, and dozens of other countries around the world.

"Mine clearance is important throughout the world. My job is to train Kenyans and personnel from other countries how to effectively handle their landmine problems. We teach our students how to probe safely and, once they find a mine, be able to take care of it," said U.S. Navy Senior Chief Michael Brown, Lead Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Instructor.

Brown explained that the main focus of IMATC is "to train Kenyans to perform de-mining and EOD missions throughout the Horn of Africa."

According to Clear Path International, the world has roughly 110 million landmines spread among as many as 80 countries. More than 140 million people live in exposed to the dangers of landmines or unexploded ordnance. Roughly 25,000 people are killed or injured by mines each year. Two out of every three victims being civilians and one in every four being children. The IMATC faculty and students are working to mitigate this hazard.

Kenyan Army Sergeant Douglas Mwangi, EOD and Demining Instructor, says the key to the center's success is the capability to work in an international organization. "One of the challenges is the language, because here we teach in English, and when we have some of the African countries we try to instruct a little in Swahili," he said. "This forces those who don't understand English to bring their own interpreter. That is very challenging to us because within the scope of the lesson it may take wrong because of the interpretation."

Colin Hill is a former U.K. military EOD officer. Now he's an IMATC EOD instructor and Small Arms and Light Weapons Counter Proliferation Program Manager. He explained that UN reports validate the success of the center, which is based on the number of square meters cleared. Many countries have enormous stockpiles which are stored poorly in heavily populated areas, leading to a high risk of catastrophic accidents. To counter this risk, the center has branched out by adding a disaster management cell and small arms and light weapons wing.

"In the small arms light weapons area, there is a lot of naivety and misunderstanding. Lack of control is a key issue. That is why we are working with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, to look at stockpile security and management," said Hill. By diversifying, the center is eligible to receive non-governmental organizational support from agencies such as Humanitarian Mine Action.

"We are providing a capability here at IMATC with mine and UXO detection dogs," said Philip James, IMATC Mines Awareness program manager and former UK military Bomb Disposal Operator. "Dogs have been a proven asset in clearance operations. We are also providing training courses for both demining and EOD, to service the Humanitarian Mine Action NGOs."

Students come to the center to grow professionally in a unique environment. IMATC student Nico Bosman explained that whether the student is a former military member or an average citizen wanting to make a difference he is leaving the center with an excellent knowledge base. "I can recommend the course for the experienced and the inexperienced. I think the standard of the course is excellent and the knowledge we gain is very helpful. It will be a career highlight for me," Bosman said.

Central Iraq AQ networks targeted; 10 suspects detained

BAGHDAD
– Ten suspected terrorists, including two wanted men, were removed from al-Qaeda in Iraq networks Thursday and Friday, as Coalition forces targeted the terrorist organization in central Iraq. Coalition forces continued operations to dismantle AQI bombing networks Thursday. In Baghdad, forces captured an alleged AQI cell leader who reports suggest is responsible for improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces and Iraqi police.

Also Thursday near Tuz Khurmatu, 70 km southeast of Kirkuk, forces detained three individuals during an operation targeting an AQI leader associated with IED activities in the area.

AQI networks in Diyala province were further disrupted by Coalition forces early Friday. In Hafriyah, 89 km southeast of Kirkuk, forces captured an alleged weapons smuggler also believed to be associated with IED attacks in the area. Three additional suspects assessed to be the wanted man’s associates were detained as well. Two more suspects were netted Friday in an operation targeting a Diyala-area AQI courier in as-Sadiyah, 110 km northeast of Baghdad.

Soldiers Train Iraqi EOD's

MND-B PAO

FOB FALCON, Iraq (Nov. 20, 2008) – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers conducted explosive ordnance training with Iraqi security forces bomb disposal technicians Nov. 16 at Forward Operating Base Falcon in southern Baghdad. Soldiers and leaders from the 752nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, attached to the 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, MND-B, detonated a van full of munitions to train soldiers from the 9th Iraqi Army Bomb Disposal Company on the proper techniques for effective post-blast site exploitation.

"I think this training is important for the Iraqi EOD because it gives them a chance to see how we operate," said Staff Sgt. Stephen Cunningham, a team leader assigned to the 752nd EOD Co.

Soldiers conducted a controlled detonation of a vehicle Nov. 16 during an Iraqi security forces training exercise to create a realistic scenario for post-blast analysis of the site. The Soldiers packed the van with approximately 200 pounds of explosives to properly depict a real-world scenario. "As far as their equipment is concerned, they have plenty of robots; their bomb suits and their knowledge is very up to date," explained Cunningham. "They know what they're dealing with, especially when it comes to conventional ordnance." The training keeps the IA soldiers on their toes and it contributes to the fight in the long run, said Spc. Curtis Garner, an EOD specialist assigned to the 752nd EOD Co.

"They seem really responsive, and they have a good grasp on what they are doing for their country," stated Garner. "We just offer them a different avenue, outlook or thought process."

"In the beginning, we received good training and knowledge from our friends," said Lt. Col. Neve Rathwan Risa, commander of the 9th IA Div. Bomb Disposal Company. "They have good experience, and hopefully we will develop ourselves to deal with the improvised explosive devices." Risa stressed the importance of knowledge and training to his soldiers and said he believes the exercise was a good opportunity for Iraqi bomb disposal technicians to train with coalition forces. "It's very important to have this kind of branch in the new IA to deal with all the roadside bombs and to disarm any explosive devices and make the roads safe for the people and the army," Risa said.

The team is an excellent bomb disposal company, said 1st Lt. Brad Lewis, EOD technician assigned to the 752nd EOD Co. They are one of the leading bomb disposal companies in the IA. "These guys played a big part in the push for Sadr City earlier this year," stated Lewis. "Since, we have been trying to work them by establishing training programs, training of the younger soldiers and getting them to the point where they could pass the EOD school in Basra."

This type of training signifies what the ISF needs to eventually take control of another operational area, said Maj. Mike Ricciarti, liaison to MND-B EOD operations. Ricciarti said coalition forces are a better-equipped and trained force over the last five years and he believes improvements for the ISF are on the horizon. "We are partnered with the ISF; we are mentoring them, and we are assisting on levels that we can," Ricciarti explained. "We're sharing tactics, techniques and procedures that will help them stay alive and continue on with their mission."

Stronger Iraqi Force Means Fewer Hostilities

by Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (Nov. 3, 2008) – The number of attacks in Iraq is at its lowest level since January 2004, and this is proof of the growing capabilities of the Iraqi security forces, the vice chief of staff of the Iraqi Joint Forces said Sunday. Gen. Nasier Abadi, briefed reporters in Baghdad along with coalition spokesman U.S. Army Brig. Gen. David Perkins and Brig. Johnny Torrens-Spence of the British army, deputy commander general of Multinational Security Transition Command Iraq.

Iraqi police practice clearing a room on Nov. 1. Iraqi security forces are growing in combat strength and logistic capability, resulting in the lowest number of enemy attacks since January 2004. “The enemy has lost his ability to fight in frontal operations or offensives in big groups,” Abadi said through an interpreter. Threats now come from individual attacks and indirect combat, such as roadside bombs and so-called “sticky bombs” that attackers attach to targeted vehicles with magnets, he said. Abadi said the Iraqi security forces are moving to sustain progress and build on their capabilities. Iraqi forces are working in Ninevah, Diyala and Baghdad, and continue to work on improving logistics, he added.

Iraqi security forces also are readying for the next large security operation: ensuring the elections now set for early next year will be safe, Abadi said. “The commands have also started putting together plans to ensure the next elections in 567 voting centers,” he said. “The society’s security and individual security is a necessity, and I call on all citizens to take on their big role in maintaining a secure environment through watch and observing and checking their vehicles and their work places to stop the effects of sticky bombs.”

Iraqi and coalition leaders also are working to build Iraq’s air force and navy, he said. Torrens-Spence agreed, and said his command’s priority has shifted as it helps to build the Iraqi military. “Until the early part of this year, the priority … was to generate sufficient forces for counterterrorist operations,” he said. “We were, frankly, in a hurry, and the focus was deliberately on creating and equipping as many infantry combat units as we could in a short space of time.”

But with the improvement in security in the country and the continued bulk-up in capability and size of the Iraqi military, MNSTCI has been able to shift to building an independent, self-sufficient army that not only can take on the terrorists and win, but also transforms to becoming a force capable of defending the nation’s borders, the brigadier said. “The Ministry of Defense’s main focus right now, as you heard from General Abadi, is on logistics,” Torrens-Spence said. “And this is coming on pretty well. There are still many gaps, and we’re working hard with our Iraqi colleagues to address these.”

The brigadier listed a number of accomplishments, including the turnover of the Beiji ammunition depot to the Iraqi army. The Iraqi army now maintains small-arms repair facilities, and operates maintenance facilities for wheeled, tracked vehicles. “The General Transportation Regiment, which provides logistics support from the national bases forward to the divisions, became operational this month,” Torrens-Spence said. “A new computer logistic network, which links the depots, the Ministry of Defense and the divisions, is now fully functional. And the Ministry of Defense-wide personnel management system is also on track to be launched in the new year.”

Next year, the Iraqi Defense Ministry will invest in building communications, surveillance and target acquisition, bomb disposal and engineers. “We fully support these programs, and we will do our best to assist our Iraqi friends to bring these important capabilities into service efficiently and smoothly,” the brigadier said.

The growth of the air force and the navy is a little behind that of the army, and this was expected, he said. The Iraqi air force and navy are small, but building, he noted. The Iraqi air force flies about 350 sorties a week and is playing an increasingly active counterinsurgency role. The force also conducts surveillance and reconnaissance missions in support of the army and is providing important logistic support.

“Next year, we expect the first precision air-to-ground capability attack to be fielded with rocket-firing MI-17 helicopters and combat Caravan aircraft fitted with Hellfire missiles,” Torrens-Spence said. The first new pilots for the Iraqi air force recently graduated and are now operational.

The navy is conducting three times as many patrols as it was last year, with increasing amounts of boarding and searching of vessels coming into Iraqi territorial waters. “The navy has just taken delivery of the first six of 26 Defender Class fast-patrol craft and is expecting the delivery of four large patrol ships from Italy in 2009,” the brigadier said.

More remains to be done, he acknowledged. “The army is still seriously short of middle-rank officers and sergeants, and is looking actively at increasing the through-put of officers at the Staff College and more English language training,” he said. The logistic system remains fragile, especially the supply of spare parts to the forward locations, Torrens-Spence said. Key skills such as mechanics, communications specialists and cooks still are in short supply. “But looking to the future, we see the first signs of reconfiguring the armed forces from their current counterinsurgency focus to a more conventional posture – defense of the homeland,” he said. “We welcome this.”

Iraq announced it is buying M1 tanks, C-130 transport aircraft and armed reconnaissance helicopters. The brigadier said this “marks a significant step down this road, in line with the Ministry of Defense’s long-term development plans.”

No Socialism, No Marxism, No Obamanism

America did not shed so much blood, treasure and tears only to bring Marxism to our own shores. I refuse to pay allegience to a Marxist, and I will do everything legally within my power to stop it. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. If you Republicans want to play nice to get along, get the hell out of my party or we'll start a true American Conservative Party.

If you do not believe that there is a candidate running for president who is a socialist if not a Marxist, take a very good listen to this.
Hat tip: NakedEmporerNews.

We have shed much blood. We have lost many young and brilliant and brave and scared young men. We have sacrificed too much of our sacred treasure to turn around and disgrace these men by inviting into our country that which they fought against. We shall not dishonor their memories. We shall not dishonor their missions. We shall not dishonor their victories. No way. No how. No Obama!

Please forgive my political anger. I cannot believe my beloved country would knowingly turn from a capitalist society to a communist society. I truly believe my American brothers and sisters would never do that.

It is the media I blame for their lack of reporting on one candidate and trying to destroy the character of another. It is disgraceful and UNAMERICAN. That's right. I said it. Come and try to sue me. TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE. In case all you fancy lawyers forgot that, too...
