I am not going to blockquote this, just know that this article is written by Eli E. Hertz. When I read this, it came as a surprise to me. This is not too hard to do, but it isn't that easy either. On June 30, 1922, a joint resolution of both Houses of Congress of the United States unanimously endorsed the "Mandate for Palestine," confirming the irrevocable right of Jews to settle in the area of Palestine—anywhere between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea:

"Favoring the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the United States of America favors the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which should prejudice the civil and religious rights of Christian and all other non-Jewish communities in Palestine, and that the holy places and religious buildings and sites in Palestine shall be adequately protected." [italics in the original]

On September 21, 1922, the then President Warren G. Harding signed the joint resolution of approval to establish a Jewish National Home in Palestine.

Here is how members of congress expressed their support for the creation of a National Home for the Jewish people in Palestine - Eretz-Israel (Selective text read from the floor of the U.S. Congress by the Congressman from New York on June 30, 1922). All quotes included in this document are taken verbatim from the given source.

I want to make at this time, Mr. Speaker and gentlemen of the House, my attitude and views upon the Arab question in Palestine very clear and emphatic. I am in favor of carrying out one of the three following policies, to be preferred in the order in which they are named:

(1) That the Arabs shall be permitted to remain in Palestine under Jewish government and domination, and with their civil and religious rights guaranteed to them through the British mandate and under terms of the Balfour declaration.

(2) That if they will not consent to Jewish government and domination, they shall be required to sell their lands at a just valuation and retire into the Arab territory which has been assigned to them by the League of Nations in the general reconstruction of the countries of the east.

(3) That if they will not consent to Jewish government and domination, under conditions of right and justice, or to sell their lands at a just valuation and to retire into their own countries, they shall be driven from Palestine by force.

"Mr. Speaker, I wish to discuss briefly each of these alternatives in order. And first let me read the now celebrated Balfour declaration of date of November 2, 1917, during the progress of the Great War, and afterwards incorporated in the preamble of the British mandate authorized by the League of Nations. The Balfour declaration was in the following language:

His Majesty's Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine or the rights and political status enjoyed by the Jews in any other country.

"If this is not a condensed and at the same time a complete bill of rights both for the Arabs of Palestine and for the Jews who intend to remain in their present homelands outside of Palestine, I have never read or seen one. It is conceded by the Arabs themselves that the present government of the country under the British mandate and through the Zionist organization as an administrative agency is infinitely better than the government of the Turks who were chased out of the country by Allenby, the British general. It is probably better than any that the Arabs could create and maintain for themselves.

"I respectfully submit that the Arabs in Palestine should be and would be happy and content under the present government of that country if it were not for Turkish and Arab agitators, who travel around over the land stirring up trouble by making false representations concerning the true character of the Zionist movement, and by preaching a kind of holy war against the immigrant Jews who arrive from day to day. The Arabs are well represented in the personnel of the present Palestine administration, which has recognized their language as one of the official languages of the country, and has given official standing to the Moslem religion.

"In the second place, if the Arabs do not wish to remain in Palestine under Jewish government and domination there is plenty of room outside in purely Arab surroundings. The British Government and her allies made overtures and gave pledges to the Arab people to furnish them lands and protect their freedom in consideration of Arab alliance with the Allies during the World War. That pledge has been kept. The Hedjaz kingdom was established in ancient Arabia, and Hussein, Grand Sheriff of Mecca, was made king and freed from all Turkish influence. The son of King Hussein, Prince Feisal, is now the head of the kingdom of Mesopotamia [Iraq], and Arab predominance in that country has been assured by the Allies to the Arab people.

"Mesopotamia is alone capable of absorbing 30,000,000 people, according to a report submitted to the British Government by the Great English engineer, Sir William Wilcocks. Arab rights are also fully recognized and protected by the French mandate over Syria. There are also several flourishing Arabic cultural and political colonies in Egypt. In short, the Arab-speaking populations of Asia and Africa number about 38,000,000 souls and occupy approximately 2,375,000 square miles, many times larger than the territory of Great Britain. In other words under the reconstruction of the map of the east, the Arabs have been given practical control of Greater Arabia, Mesopotamia, Syria, and parts of Egypt, which gives them an average of 38 acres per person. If the Arabs are compelled to leave Palestine and turn it over entirely to the Jews, it is admitted that the Arab race would still be one of the wealthiest landowning races on the earth. Therefore, I contend that if they will not consent to live peaceably with the Jews, they should be made to sell their lands and retire to places reserved for them somewhere in Arabia [Saudi], Syria, Mesopotamia, or Egypt, that suit them best, and where they can worship Allah, Mahomet [Muhammad], and the Koran to their heart's content. After all is said, the fact remains that the Arabs have more lands than they need, and the Jews have none. I am in favor of a readjustment under the Balfour declaration, without too great regard to nice distinctions in the matter of the question of self-determination. This thought brings me to my third proposal heretofore mentioned, that the Arabs should be driven out of Palestine by the British and Jews, or by somebody else, if they will not listen to the voice of reason and of justice.

"I shall probably be told that, regardless of the question of land and property rights, the Arabs have an interest in the holy places around Jerusalem. Admitting that their claims in this regard are just, there should be no trouble along this line. There is no reason to believe that Jews and Christians would deny them access to the holy places in the pilgrimages that they might desire to make from their Arab countries. But if the rights of the Jews to their ancient homeland are to be made dependent, as a final question, upon Moslem interests in the holy places around Jerusalem, I am willing and prepared to repudiate these rights entirely and to shut the Arabs out altogether."

I find this very interesting. How many of you knew about this? Why am I so uninformed? Is this due to PC that we cannot even learn about true history? Remember, who wins the war gets to write the history. That is because we write our history, and Germany and Japan write theirs. I'm sure they were not celebrating getting their butts handed to them. That is one reason why we understand what really happened with those gas chambers. Well, at least those of us who don't walk around with tin-foil as a hat! Have a great weekend.

I can say, however, that it is probably about some really bad situations and outcomes that could have been prevented...had we only enforced our borders. I mean, really. There are legal ways to enter our country, and we welcome you. Yes we do, I do. If you come here illegally, I want nothing to do with you because you are not to be trusted. After all, you broke one of our most sacred laws. What law won't you break?

News: Terrorism, Racism, Flight 93 Memorial

Today has been very in the destruction business by the oh-so-peaceful 'people'. We have been hit in NYC again, but the person has not been caught. There is a witness, however. Israel was hit by an Arab-Israeli with an automatic machine gun, and 55 Iraqis were blown-up today by terrorists. Some people will consider these facts 'poisonous' to the debate as to whether or not to do this or that. I disagree. These are facts. They are very stubborn things, you know.

I will also share with you an article on true racism later in this post. Let us start with the article provided by Gathering of Eagles:

Domestic Terrorism Alert: Small Bomb Explodes at Times Square Recruiting Center.
March 6, 2008

UPDATE: This is the recruiting office most often defended by NY GOE members against leftist attacks. Make no mistake, there is an enemy here at home, and regardless of their claims of “peace,” they have no problem engaging in acts of violence and domestic terrorism.

NEW YORK - A small bomb caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early today, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above “the crossroads of the world.”

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m. No one was injured. The blast left a gaping hole in the front window and shattered a glass door, twisting and blackening its metal frame.

Authorities said at a news conference that a witness saw a person on a bicycle wearing a backpack and acting suspiciously, but that no one saw a person place the device in front of the recruiting center.

Palestinian Terrorist Kills at Least Eight at Jerusalem School.

A Palestinian terrorist infiltrated a religious school in Jerusalem at about 9 p.m. Thursday (March 6) and opened fire throughout the complex, shooting dead at least eight mostly high school-age students. [1] Reports put the number of wounded at about 10, among them a 16-year-old boy in serious condition from chest wounds. [2]

The terrorist, an East Jerusalem resident, is believed to have perpetrated the attack, [3] and police and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops searched the premises for two hours to determine whether there was a second or third terrorist. [4] The perpetrator attacked the students as they celebrated a holiday in the "Mercaz Harav" school dining room and studied religious texts in the school library. [5] Details were still unclear in the immediate aftermath of the event, but reports suggest that the terrorist was killed by an IDF paratrooper who engaged him in a gun battle. [6]

In Gaza, where Iran-backed terrorists have fired more than 4,000 rockets at civilians in Israel during the past two years, Palestinians celebrated the attacks by firing guns in the air, handing out candy and giving prayers of thanks at local mosques. [7]

On the same day as the attack, an Israeli soldier was killed and another seriously wounded in an ambush by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists on the Gaza border. [8] Israel evacuated all of its citizens from Gaza in Aug. 2005 in hopes of paving the way for an independent Palestinian state. [Continue reading.]

Afterward, the Israeli envoy to the UN stated that they were going to continue the peace talks. Excuse me, but doesn't there need to be someone on the other side of the table with whom you are discussing peace who actually WANTS PEACE? Please pray for Israel and the situation on the ground over there. I do not have a good feeling about this. Oh, btw, the Arabs were dancing in the streets celebrating the deaths of the Israelis. That is how I determine who is in favor of this atrocity and who is not. Just in case anyone is wondering, THIS IS ISRAELI LAND. Nowhere in history, other than Israel, does the loser get their land back. Besides, it wasn't the Arabs land to begin with, but that's a whole 'nother story.

Big Dog's Weblog has news of that ugly cresant they are trying to put in the field of Sommerset, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93 was taken down by our brave citizens. If you have not been following this situation, the people in charge of this project have decided to become multi-cultural on us, and they want to place an Islamic cresant as the memorial. This is unacceptable! We (many bloggers, family members, and readers) took the 'streets' (blogs) and protested loudly. We also got a hold of their numbers, and they did not like that very much. GOOD. Frances Rice, chairman of the National Black Republican Association, describes the Democratic Party as the architect of modern day racism.

Rice, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and lawyer, says in an interview it was Republicans who pushed through much of the ground-breaking civil rights legislation in Congress. Now, she says, Republicans stand for empowering blacks to help them out of poverty. In contrast, Rice says, the Democrats push to keep blacks dependent on government handouts and encourage them to see themselves as victims.

“The Democratic Party has built its power base on the backs of poor blacks, and they want to keep blacks poor, angry, and voting for Democrats,” Rice tells Newsmax. “Every election cycle they go into the black community and preach hatred against the Republican Party and get blacks to cast a protest vote against Republicans.”

Frances Rice is a very brave woman. She is doing today what a few good men did a long time ago, she is standing up against the powers-that-be to offer a different life to people where they do not have to be dependent on the government. Once you become dependent of the government, then they control your lives. That is NOT freedom.

Democrats, seen as the civil rights party, supported slavery, opposed civil rights legislation, instituted the "Black Codes," and created the Jim Crow system. The Republican Party, in contrast, was founded in opposition to slavery, and supported post-Civil War and Civil Rights Movement-era legislation.

"All of the racism that we associate with [the southern] region of the country originated with and was enforced by elected Democrats," writes Bruce Bartlett, a former domestic policy advisor to President Ronald Reagan and a Treasury official under President George H.W. This is a very interesting article. She takes you back in time to shine the light on the truth about who was really behind the racist policies, the racist people, and who sat a member of the KKK on the Supreme Court. This should settle it, but I know it won't. That is alright. I am willing to go to whatever lengths it takes so that we may all come together as one people under God in the most beautiful country.

We love life, they love death, let's kill 'em! War's over

I have been reading ACT! for America, and there are some pretty alarming articles. Especially if you have not been keeping up with the TRUTH of what is actually happening in the world these days. First, I will share an article by Alan Dershowitz in the WSJ, then I will share ten links directly from ACT! for America. (Alan's article is not on their site, nor could I find the link. That is why it is re-posted here.)

Worshippers of Death.

Zahra Maladan is an educated woman who edits a women's magazine in Lebanon. She is also a mother, who undoubtedly loves her son. She has ambitions for him, but they are different from those of most mothers in the West. She wants her son to become a suicide bomber.

At the recent funeral for the assassinated Hezbollah terrorist Imad Moughnaya -- the mass murderer responsible for killing 241 marines in 1983 and more than 100 women, children and men in Buenos Aires in 1992 and 1994 -- Ms. Maladan was quoted in the New York Times giving the following warning to her son: "if you're not going to follow the steps of the Islamic resistance martyrs, then I don't want you."

Zahra Maladan represents a dramatic shift in the way we must fight to protect our citizens against enemies who are sworn to kill them by killing themselves. The traditional paradigm was that mothers who love their children want them to live in peace, marry and produce grandchildren. Women in general, and mothers in particular, were seen as a counterweight to male belligerence. The picture of the mother weeping as her son is led off to battle -- even a just battle -- has been a constant and powerful image.

Now there is a new image of mothers urging their children to die, and then celebrating the martyrdom of their suicidal sons and daughters by distributing sweets and singing wedding songs. More and more young women -- some married with infant children -- are strapping bombs to their (sometimes pregnant) bellies, because they have been taught to love death rather than life. Look at what is being preached by some influential Islamic leaders:

"We are going to win, because they love life and we love death," said Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah. He has also said: "[E]ach of us lives his days and nights hoping more than anything to be killed for the sake of Allah." Shortly after 9/11, Osama bin Laden told a reporter: "We love death. The U.S. loves life. That is the big difference between us."

"The Americans love Pepsi-Cola, we love death," explained Afghani al Qaeda operative Maulana Inyadullah. Sheik Feiz Mohammed, leader of the Global Islamic Youth Center in Sydney, Australia, preached: "We want to have children and offer them as soldiers defending Islam. Teach them this: There is nothing more beloved to me than wanting to die as a mujahid." Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech: "It is the zenith of honor for a man, a young person, boy or girl, to be prepared to sacrifice his life in order to serve the interests of his nation and his religion."

How should Western democracies fight against an enemy whose leaders preach a preference for death?

The two basic premises of conventional warfare have long been that soldiers and civilians prefer living to dying and can thus be deterred from killing by the fear of being killed; and that combatants (soldiers) can easily be distinguished from noncombatants (women, children, the elderly, the infirm and other ordinary citizens). These premises are being challenged by women like Zahra Maladan. Neither she nor her son -- if he listens to his mother -- can be deterred from killing by the fear of being killed. They must be prevented from succeeding in their ghoulish quest for martyrdom. Prevention, however, carries a high risk of error. The woman walking toward the group of soldiers or civilians might well be an innocent civilian. A moment's hesitation may cost innocent lives. But a failure to hesitate may also have a price.

Late last month, a young female bomber was shot as she approached some shops in central Baghdad. The Iraqi soldier who drew his gun hesitated as the bomber, hands raised, insisted that she wasn't armed. The soldier and a shop owner finally opened fire as she dashed for the stores; she was knocked to the ground but still managed to detonate the bomb, killing three and wounding eight. Had the soldier and other bystanders not called out a warning to others -- and had they not shot her before she could enter the shops -- the death toll certainly would have been higher. Had he not hesitated, it might have been lower.

As more women and children are recruited by their mothers and their religious leaders to become suicide bombers, more women and children will be shot at -- some mistakenly. That too is part of the grand plan of our enemies. They want us to kill their civilians, who they also consider martyrs, because when we accidentally kill a civilian, they win in the court of public opinion. One Western diplomat called this the "harsh arithmetic of pain," whereby civilian casualties on both sides "play in their favor." Democracies lose, both politically and emotionally, when they kill civilians, even inadvertently. As Golda Meir once put it: "We can perhaps someday forgive you for killing our children, but we cannot forgive you for making us kill your children."

Civilian casualties also increase when terrorists operate from within civilian enclaves and hide behind human shields. This relatively new phenomenon undercuts the second basic premise of conventional warfare: Combatants can easily be distinguished from noncombatants. Has Zahra Maladan become a combatant by urging her son to blow himself up? Have the religious leaders who preach a culture of death lost their status as noncombatants? What about "civilians" who willingly allow themselves to be used as human shields? Or their homes as launching pads for terrorist rockets?

The traditional sharp distinction between soldiers in uniform and civilians in nonmilitary garb has given way to a continuum. At the more civilian end are babies and true noncombatants; at the more military end are the religious leaders who incite mass murder; in the middle are ordinary citizens who facilitate, finance or encourage terrorism. There are no hard and fast lines of demarcation, and mistakes are inevitable -- as the terrorists well understand.

We need new rules, strategies and tactics to deal effectively and fairly with these dangerous new realities. We cannot simply wait until the son of Zahra Maladan -- and the sons and daughters of hundreds of others like her -- decide to follow his mother's demand. We must stop them before they export their sick and dangerous culture of death to our shores.

This is where they are mistaken. We love death as well. We love to kill anyone who wishes to do any harm to our people and our country. Come, show your lonely, pathetic faces. We shall make your wish come true. We shall kill you. Then you can go live with your true master, Satan. For you are nothing but evil. Have you not read in your holy book to revere the former books? Did you miss the part about the creation of the world? You are the snakes, and we are the exterminators. Bring it on...

Wednesday's Hero: Sgt First Class Juanita Wilson

For today's Wednesday Hero I have gone over to Vet's for Freedom's website. You will find many heroes over there, and I chose SFC Juanita Wilson in particular because of her outstanding integrity off the battlefield as well as on it.

Sergeant First Class Juanita Wilson is already a patriot for what happened to her and her unit while serving in Iraq. What happened after is what makes SFC Wilson a remarkable inspiration. SPC Wilson, serving with the Army Reserve 411th Engineering Battalion based out of Hilo, Hawaii, was seriously wounded when her convoy was ambushed by a roadside bomb and rocket propelled grenade attacked in August of 2004. After losing her left arm in the attack, SFC Wilson repeatedly focused her concern and efforts on other injured members of her convoy and unit until help finally arrived.

That selfless dedication to others and her commitment to her nation didn’t end on that Iraqi road in August 2004. After returning to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, she went through extensive rehabilitation and had time to reflect on her many options. Throughout continued painful surgeries and long hours of intense rehabilitation, Wilson persevered with the same Warrior ethos she showed in the summer of 2004. Not only has she started a new chapter in life through her recovery, she continued another by reenlisting on the steps at the Capitol Building on April 6, 2006.

SPC Wilson’s complete dedication to duty in the face of devastating injuries and personal hardships make her an inspiration to the tens of thousands of service members who choose to reenlist every year to serve their country in the Global War on Terror. The Army states that two out every three eligible soldiers continue to reenlist. Going into the 3rd Quarter of the fiscal year 2006, the Army was 15% ahead of its re-enlistment goal of 34,668. And approaching May 2006 their numbers have topped 40,000.

She is an inspiration to all of us who find ourselves incapacitated for one reason or another. There is hope, there is life beyond ourselves, there is true grit...if we just reach out and grab it. God bless you, Sgt. First Class Juanita Wilson, and thank you for service.

On Sunday I returned from Baghdad, where I reported on the situation on the ground. I had the honor of walking the streets with our brave troops, and without hesitation can report: Baghdad has been transformed. The progress we have talked about for months is real and dramatic.

I was on the ground in Baghdad for 5 days, and did not hear a hostile shot fired or hear one single explosion. It was completely different from when I was there in 2005, when gunshots and explosion were background noise.

I invite you to read my dispatches from the front, all of which can be found at National Review Online. I wrote about the lack of media attention,* the need for anti-war leaders to face the reality of Iraq,* my first hand observations on patrol in "A Neighborhood, Reborn,"* and the grassroots Iraqi surge that has taken place with the "Sons of Iraq."*

More than anything else, the trip underscored the need for veterans of this generation to communicate the need to succeed in Iraq. Thankfully, we have planned an excellent way to do it-our National Heroes Tour and Vets on the Hill.

It has been a while since we have looked at the Fairness Doctrine, but now we have a reason to do so. The National Center for Public Policy Research and Project 21 will discuss this. There is also concern within the TSA by some concerned patriots about the same conditions being in place that existed prior to 9/11/2001. Let us not forget Columbia, eh? Backdoor Imposition of Fairness Doctrine Opposed by Black Broadcasters

New "Local Programming" Regulations Under FCC Consideration Could Lead to Broadcast Restrictions

>Washington, D.C. - Concerned that proposed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations regarding "local programming content and diversity" could lead to a new "Fairness Doctrine," black broadcasting veterans affiliated with Project 21 have submitted comments to the FCC opposing new restrictions on currently-accepted political and social content.

"We've seen an explosion in broadcast content since the FCC set aside the political restrictions of the Fairness Doctrine over 20 years ago," said Project 21 Fellow Deneen Borelli. "To bring about new restrictions now would hurt businesses, political discourse and the diversity these proposed regulations purport to want to foster. All it will do is hurt free expression and free speech."

The FCC released a report in late January on the topic of "broadcast localism" that ostensibly seeks "to ensure that broadcasters are appropriately addressing the needs of their local communities." Some of the report's proposals include "increase[ing] local content and diversity in programming," "establish[ment of] permanent advisory boards... to consult periodically on community needs and issues" and new licensing guidelines to "ensure that all broadcasters provide some locally-oriented programming."

Project 21 members and other critics of new regulation of accepted broadcast content contend this would set the stage for a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. This defunct FCC rule, requiring broadcasters to present contrasting viewpoints on controversial issues, was abolished in 1987. Between the 1980s and today, talk radio grew from 75 stations nationwide to around 1,800. It is feared that a return of content restrictions would return broadcasting to what former NBC "Meet the Press" host Bill Monroe called "timid, don't-rock-the-boat coverage."

It also is noted that technological innovations such as the Internet, with services such as blogs, YouTube and other web sites, as well as 24-hour broadcast news outlets, make access to all views readily available.

"Media is a business driven by success and profit. While this FCC report proposes regulations with a veneer of promoting balance and fairness, a closer examination shows they will likely blunt today's most successful models of discourse," said Project 21 chairman Mychal Massie, a former talk radio host. "Any government interference in content that draws views or listeners and does not violate accepted standards of decency should be viewed hyper-critically."

Project 21 members submitting comments against the FCC's Report on Broadcast Localism and the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (MB Docket No. 04-233) include Chairman Mychal Massie, Fellow Deneen Borelli, and National Advisory Council members Kevin Martin, Bob Parks, the Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson and Elder Doctor Levon Yuille. All have been involved in radio and television broadcasting.

Former FAA Inspector: TSA's Enforcement of Post-9/11 Laws 'Basically Nonexistent'

Thousands of foreign student pilots have been able to enroll and obtain pilot licenses from U.S. flight schools, despite tough laws passed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, according to internal government documents obtained by ABC News.

"Some of the very same conditions that allowed the 9-11 tragedy to happen in the first place are still very much in existence today," wrote one regional security official to his boss at the TSA, the Transportation Security Administration. [emphasis added]

"Thousands of aliens, some of whom may very well pose a threat to this country, are taking flight lessons, being granted FAA certifications and are flying planes," wrote the TSA official, Richard A. Horn, in 2005, complaining that the students did not have the proper visas. [Continue reading.]

WaPo calls the radical socialist Chavez "Venezuelan President...", but refers to Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe as "hard-line". Of course the liberal socialists at the Washington Post revere our enemy socialist Chavez, but hate our ally Uribe! Why anyone believes anything these people write is just beyond me! In case you are unaware, Columbia has been at war with its southern border for over 20 years now. They are harboring Hamas, Hizbollah, IRA, and FARC. All of which are known to be terrorists. Any enemy of the USA is certainly a friend of Chavez in Venezuela and those 'useless idiots' in Hollywood and the Left in Congress. It is such a shame that these people would prefer to see their own demise than to stand for their own country. It begs the question, "Why don't you move then?"

Calling all Angels!

I have received an email concerning one of our Veteran Army Rangers from the 101st Airborne. He was at 'Hamburber Hill' and is suspected of having been subject to agent orange. Two years ago his kidneys failed, and he went into a comma. When he came out of the comma, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He is on dialysis two or three times per week. This is just some background.

Friday night this sweet man had a stroke. We don't know the long term implications, but his wife and he could sure use some encouragement. I am calling upon everyone who reads this to write them a card of encouragement. After all, he has already given for us, it is the least we can do for them.

A Tribute to William F. Buckley Jr.

As you now know, the father of the modern conservative movement, William F. Buckley Jr., passed away this week. Bill Buckley was many things to many people: founder of National Review, enfant terrible, mischievous maverick, and host of the award-winning Firing Line. Here at Regnery, we were proud to know him as one of our beloved bestselling authors.

In 1952, Regnery published Bill Buckley's very first book-the groundbreaking God & Man at Yale. It's been selling steadily and influencing new generations of conservatives ever since. Fifty years later, we were honored to publish Buckley's moving, elegant autobiography, Miles Gone By.

Nothing we can say will do justice to this literary master. So we mourn and honor him with his own words. The following excerpts are taken from Miles Gone By, which chronicles Buckley's extraordinary life, from his childhood in Sharon, CT, to his college days at Yale, from his transoceanic sailing exploits to debating Ronald Reagan or chauffeuring Whittaker Chambers.

Conflict Over Unusual Words.

Some words, Dwight Macdonald wrote in a celebrated review of Webster's Third, belong in the "zoo section" of the dictionary. I.e., the words do exist, but the need for them is so remote, you can-and should-keep them caged up in the zoo until it is absolutely necessary to take one out, which may be never. I know a word that describes the feeling you have in the roof of your mouth when peanut butters sticks to it, but I will never use it; in fact, I decline to disclose it.

Why Don't We Complain?

We are reluctant to make our voices heard, we are afraid that our cause is too trivial to justify the horrors of a confrontation with the Authority...As I write this, on an airplane, I have run out of paper and need to reach into my briefcase for more. I cannot do this until my empty lunch tray is removed from my lap. I arrested the stewardess as she passed empty-handed down the aisle on the way to the kitchen.

"Would you please take my tray?"

"Just a moment, sir!" she said, and marched on sternly.

Shall I remind her that not fifteen minutes ago she spoke unctuously into the loudspeaker the words undoubtedly devised by the airline's highly paid public-relations counselor: "If there is anything I or Miss French can do for you to make your trip more enjoyable, please let us-" I have run out of paper.

On Yale and God.

Yes, God and Yale coexist...As I think back, I wonder that any apologetics need go any further than the remark I ran into at Yale.

"I find it easier to believe in God than to believe that Hamlet was deduced from the molecular structure of a mutton chop."

I wish I had said that.

The Secret of Fireflies.

Outdoors it was very very still, and from our bedroom we could see the fireflies. I opined to my sister Trish that when the wind dies and silence ensues, fireflies acquire a voice.

"Why do they care if it's quiet outside?"

I informed her solemnly that it was well known to adults that fireflies do not like the wind, as it interferes with their movements. Inasmuch as I was thirteen and omniscient, my explanation was accepted.

The Essence of Sailing.

When you are in the harbor, four congenial people around the table, eating and drinking and conversing, listening to music and smoking cigars, the wind and the hail and the chill outside faced up to and faced down, in your secure little anchorage-here is a compound of life's social pleasures in the womb of nature.

On Ronald Reagan.

Yes, there was the legendary aloofness, but this was forgivingly accepted...Reagan sat at one end of the table with sandwiches and a glass of wine telling stories, making Thanksgiving credible for his friends. It's hard to imagine him out of action, and best not to dwell on it.

On Whittaker Chambers.

The tokens of hope and truth were not, Chambers seemed to be saying, to be preserved by a journal of opinion, not by writers or thinkers, but only by activists. Though Chambers was intellectual, insatiable and relentlessly curious, it was action, not belletrism, that moved him most deeply.

Typical Buckley.

I said to Johnny Carson that to say that the CIA and the KGB engage in similar practices is the equivalent of saying that the man who pushes an old lady into the path of a hurtling bus is not to be distinguished from the man who pushes an old lady out of the path of a hurtling bus: on the grounds that, after all, in both cases someone is pushing old ladies around.

A good debater is not necessarily an effective vote-getter: you can find a hole in your opponent's argument through which you could drive a coach and four ringing jingle bells all the way, and thrill at the crystallization of a truth wrung out from a bloody dialogue -- which, however, may warm only you and your muse, while the smiling paralogist has in the meantime made votes by the tens of thousands.

Three new sites worth reading

I came across these sites through my trackbacking. It really does pay off, because I ran into these really cool new sites. One of them has just entered the world of blogging, and is doing quite a remarkable job. His site is Tilting at Windmill Farms, and the next one is a religious site called Our Thoughts. The magnificant job that Fabio has done is to make his thoughts, which are religious in nature, appealing to all readers. Even if they are not religious. That is tricky!

The third new site (at least to me) is by Darrell Epp, and the name of his site...you guessed it...www.darrellepp.com. lol. He is an eloquent writer, and he is also thought provoking. Sometimes he writes about politics, sometimes he writes religious things, and other times he writes about history. He just started blogging last November, so any readership you could send his way would be appreciated. Remember when we first started out? ;)

Christians Coming Under Fire:

A friend of my forwarded me a story today from The 2012 Apocalypse about Christians coming under scrutiny and possbile persecution from a government again. This time, however, it isn’t in China or one the Muslum countries who are going after the Christians. It is the government of England. According to an article published at LifeSiteNews.com, ‘the Children, Schools and Families Committee will “call Catholic bishops to account” for recent isolated attempts to re-install genuine Catholic doctrine on moral and sexual teaching.’ Yes, you heard that right. They want to stop Catholics from teaching Catholic values. Once again, they are asserting that if you teach children about abstinence and sanctity of life, you’re more dangerous than if you teach your children to become martyrs and suicide bombers. I could understand this attitued a little better if they were accusing the Catholics of trying to bring back the inquisition, but the only thing they’re being accused of is following a set of morals prescribed by their faith for their own personal lives. If that has suddenly become a crime, then i guess we’re a lot closer to global socialism than I thought.

Who am I?

In my opinion, this is the hardest question one can try to answer: who am I? We all, one day or another, we have faced a situation where we had to say who we are. But, who are we after all?

This is a tough question, because it’s not possible to describe a human being only with a few words. We are much complex, full of qualities and flaws. We are unique. We all have different ways, different principles, dreams and feelings. And that makes it quite impossible to describe us.

Some Problems With Atheism.

I agree with him. If I take a moment to admire it, the way it grasps, the way it swivels and pivots through so many planes and angles, it also seems to me to suggest the handiwork of an intelligent hand.

Of course the prevailing view says that, no, the thumb is not the result of God’s handiwork, it’s the result of time plus chance, and millions of years of random mutations. I think that view requires quite a bit more mental gymnastics than Newton’s. Let’s turn the thought experiment around. Say an atheist and his friend were walking on a small uninhabited island. They find a pencil on the ground. The atheist says, “Wow, I guess someone must have been here, at some time in the past.” His friend says no, you can’t jump to that conclusion, the pencil does not prove that someone built the pencil and then left it on the island, the pencil is most likely the product of natural random forces, like wind, gravity, erosion, and plate tectonics. The atheist says that’s nuts, that for whatever reason, his friend is going to great lengths to deny the truth that was quite plainly staring them in the face.
